I am currently taking nothing for a major depression I've had for over a year. The problem I have with AD's is many of them give me racing thoughts. I'm seeing my pdoc tomorrow, anyone have a suggestion as what to try next. I also have trouble with sleep. I was thinking of suggesting zyprexa or seroquel. Both of these drugs make me extremely lazy and I have a high energy job.

What ADs specifically have given you racing thoughts? I'm familiar with racing thoughts myself, the result of major anxiety / depression. Zoloft, an SSRI, didn't work for me, by Cymbalta, an SNRI, which I've only been on for a couple of months, cut right through the spinning in my head. It has made me sleepy & unfocused in the afternoons, but my pdoc recently added low-dose Ritalin and that seems to be helping. (I've also been diagnosed with ADHD, thus the Ritalin, which also helps counteract the soporific effect of the Cymbalta.)

I tried cymbalta but it didn't allow me to sleep. I believe it helped me with racing thoughts but not with depression.

Hi Markwell. Sorry to hear that -- Cym has been great for me -- no racing thoughts & I can sleep at night. My only problem is that I tend to want to sleep in the daytime too, usually around noon, but I think the stim is helping that now that I'm on it.

The first and MOST important thing that needs to be addressed is getting your sleep cycle regulated. Zyprexa or Seroquel are good drugs for sleep. After this is somewhat stable, then you can introduce an AD if you are having residual depression and less motivation. However, start low and go slow with your dosing to prevent the racing thoughts from returning. Good Luck. :)

How about topamax for sleep? I get so zombied out from seroquel and zyprexa. Topamax is also a mood stabilizer? Sleep really is huge for me but so is functioning the next day. I get so lazy on AP's.

So has anyone had a positive response to topamax? Does it help with sleep?

Never took it, but I'm sure it would help for sleep. I take lamictal, but Topamax is probably better for sleep.

My pdoc wants me to take 25mg of seroquel for sleep.
She says that dosage wont be as sedating and I should be able to function at work. Seroquel knocks me for a loop. I dont know what to do.

I have seroquel that I use for insomnia at 25 mg. Believe it or not even at that low dose, it knocks me out. Not too bad in the morning either.
I don't take it too often lately but would have no hesitation to take prn.

Some say its more sedating at lower dosages? I dont know what to do. It seems like if it wasnt so sedating it would be indicated for insomnia by the fda.

I took 25mgs of seroquel and the next day anxiety was horrible so I will have to try something else. She mentioned zyprexa but I am so afraid of the weight gain. Any other suggestions?
