Which is better to take benzos for sleep or seroquel.
I worry about the long term effects of both.
I will go up to 150mg of amitriptyline tonight so maybe it will start to help.

I don't have an answer you, but am in the same boat as you - contemplating Seroquel vs the Imovane that I have been taking, but not getting much sleep benefit from, for the past few months. I even have a script filled for Seroquel, but have been terrified to take it. Silly, huh? I, too, worry about the long-term effects of Seroquel, even at a low dose. I have used benzos, as needed, for a number of years, and even for sleep, but worry about habituation and escalating doses.Hope others have some helpful advice.

Yup.. you sound a lot like me terrified of the meds., last night I got about 6.5 hours sleep which is pretty good considering but that was on 1.5mg of clonazepam and 30mg of temazepam and 125mg of amitriptyline. I want to get off the benzos because I've been taking them for 4 months now. II exercise every day -- don't do much else at this point.

40 years later lower doses of benzos and no weight gain, diabetes. To me benzos the safest way to go. Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa, I'm just worried that the amitriptyline may not be enough to pull me out so I may need to add an atypical AP - just to get over the hump

I have Seroquel which was order, along iwth NArdil to help my depression. It made me too sleepy, so my doc said I can take it if I get anxious or have trouble sleeping. I have used it for insomnia only a few times.
Believe it or not, I only need 25 mg and it knocks me out. I feel groggy the next day. Some here take large doses (300 mg) but I must have a real sensitivity to it, like so many meds.
I have always been afraid of the atypicals as I know they can cause tardive dyskinesia, so I take rarely and only if I cna't sleep after exhausting other efforts. Actaully I almost never need something for sleep andymore. The depression is the biggest issue I struggle with, although insomnia can be a real difficult problem too.
I think changing meds for something like insomnia is helpful as the meds poop out often after prolonged use. Seroquel might be more effective med for you at this time. I would at least try it to see how you react to it.

I took seroquel for close to two years for sleep and it worked well for a long time, however recently I was having issues. If I take the small 25mg doses during the day for anxiety my 300mg dose at night may not be effective, then i'd be screwed. i started at 100mg and increased to 200 pretty quickly, then 300 after a year and at 300 I think I was getting a little dull and maybe depressive. after the first year at 100/200mg I got sleep, but not the same good sleep and would wake up in the night alot. eventually I grew to hate the way it felt when it kicked in too, I would have trouble sleeping because of that icky heart racing feeling and being hungry and stuff.
just switched to trazodone 100mg and it is working surprisingly well. I'm only 3 days in though.

Thanks, I've thought about giving trazodone a try.
