doesn't just want to prescribe SSRI's? I mean seriously. Do you interview them first to see how they feel about med treatments, etc.
Thanks!

In my experience only not an easy task. And the money of appointments and wait times. Maybe someone will have a great idea. Phillipa

it was suggested to me (i ended up doing something different) that you should ask for a 15 minute appointment with teh pdoc before doing the hour-long 'intake' interview. which you can use to discuss openess to some option (eg, 'would you ever rx an MAOI and TCA simultaneously?' and either they'd say NO never! or 'well if the circumstances were right that would be a potential treatmnet option, though it woudl require extra care)

Hi Laney,
Along the lines of what d/r wrote. I've become more direct over the phone with both therapists and docs of all stripe. Pdocs need to be circumspect--however, they should be willing to address basic questions such as d/r suggested.
This has worked well for me...
This hasn't worked well for me....
I really don't want, what do you think...?
This is what I think my issue is....
This is what I'm looking for, what do you think?Or something like that at any rate, with out them dx'ing over the phone, and w/o us trying to lock a doc into something before they've met us.
(Pdocs do need to cover their b*tts despite the bad press they get as a profession.)
However, you pay them!
Good Luck!

Yep! I would do that directly. These docs are pretty much fed the data the drug companies want them to here. They simply don't have time to go out and do their own research.
Can also see a GP.

It was a ton of work, but at one time I did a big project. I got pdoc names from the yellow pages. I made a letter, with a copy for each, and a self addressed stamped envelope for each, to make it easy for them to respond to me.
In my letter I briefly described my history, what treatments I want to try, what I've done, and what characteristics I like in a pdoc. (such as accessability, open mindedness, exerience with maois, who would you recommend your depressed child see, whatever is important to you)
I got responses back from maybe 10% of them. Of those, I did followup on the phone. I ended up choosing someone that was exactly what I wanted.
I think it takes more work than we would like to admit to find a real good doctor. We have to be specific in what we are looking for, and then set out with all the creativity we can think of to find who that person is. That means phone, phone, phone, letters, more phone, referrals, internet.
I've never done it and didn't think about it till right now, but maybe you could schedule an affordable 15 minute visit to not discuss yourself, but to discuss what you want to see in a doctor and whether the person sitting in front of you is that person or not.
