Any success with TCAs for atypical depression?

Posted by em_kath on March 21, 2010, at 19:54:39

I have done a lot of research, nearly all of which says that tricyclics are generally not effective for atypical depression. I have tried most of the classes of antidepressants except for TCAs, and I am just curious if anybody here with atypical depression has tried and/or responded to them. I am on an MAOI now, which is supposedly the preferred class for atypical depression, but I am not sure it's for me. Thanks for any input!

I was wondering the same thing. Which MAOI? Parnate?

I'm currently on the 12 mg Emsam patch. Are you on an MAOI now for atypical depression too?

I've had a pretty unsatisfactory response to Emsam, my pdoc put me on the highest dose just to make sure we weren't missing something but I see him tomorrow and it's possible I may switch. I have no idea which direction to go... Parnate? Try Wellbutrin again (the only thing that has ever really helped, but quit working)? My other thought was a TCA but that's likely to be a waste of time from what I've read.

I hate this trial and error thing, it's so exhausting. And no matter what I do, I have to endure the 2 week washout period first :(

I don't think emsam is really as powerful as parnate or nardil for atypical though. My grandmom took nardil for atypical depression for years and it seems to have worked.

Yes, I have succes with a combination of Anafranil 25 mg and Maprotiline (TCA-NRI)75 mg.

I cant sleep because of Anafranil, so i take 2 mg clonazepam and 0.5mg risperdone at bedtime.Maprotiline is an old TCA, similar to Nortryptiline, which unfortunately isn't available in my country.
