Dopamine for blank-thoughts? bupropion could help

Posted by vic80 on March 7, 2010, at 13:08:24

could a decreased dopamine level cause one to have blank-thoughts.... periods of mind blanking.... being emotionally numbed.... detached.... unmotivated etc.....
would adding bupropion to lexapro help alleviate feelings of blank-thoughts... ?

Might do. I would up your dose of Lex to 20 and review in 4 - 6 weeks first. Is this the first SSRI you have tried ? There are others and they are all different, maybe you could try another SSRI or a SNRI before augmentation.

The SSRI that confuses me is prozac according to the book it hits more than one neurotransmitter. True or not. I've heard lexapro is very good. Some new studies on lamictal don't rate it that high. So I'd try upping lexapro also. Phillipa

Prozac does increase noradrenaline and dopamine as well. Take a look at the following study. The graphs are helpful.

http://www.nature.com/npp/journal/v27/n6/full/1395967a.html#tbl4

Its hypothesized that this is due to the 5 HT2C antagonistic properties of Prozac.

In fact if lexapro doesn't work out prozac might be a good drug to try next. Many say it doesn't cause the same level of blunting that the other SSRis cause.

If your Dx is OCD maybe blank thoughts is the way its supposed to be and you are just not used to it?

Ignorance is showing. Does this mean prozac acts on three neurotransmitters serotonin, norepenephine, and dopamine? Would that account for the panic that developed for me on three days of 20mg of prozac even with xanax? Thanks Phillipa

Yes it could, although I'm not sure if that is the only reason prozac causes panic like that. I still think there is a lot to these drugs that we do not know. Have you ever tried a lower dose?

No I tried it when first out and 20mg capsules only. Day l wallpapered a foyer I'd had the wallpaper for for three years, day 2 anxiety, day three sheer terror and panic. I flushed them down the toilet.Took me three days with extra xanax to come back to normal. The pdoc at the time said "You had a dramatic response to it please take it every three days". I refused as wasn't anxious or depressed and working. Was taking xanax .25 three times a day and drinking 4-6 beers a night. Jogging and felt great no fears at all. Now I'm no alchohol for 15 years and never felt worse anxiety wise in my whole life and no work had to stop. Thanks hope you have a magic answer. Love Phillipa

ugh! i hated bupropion, 450 is about 5mg of amphetamine in the feeling which is very dirty in the comparison. Try it if you want. Higher doses don't cause any increase. 450 is the best for motivation but it gives you anxiety like hell.

Alright, lets give bupropion a try... what symptoms should I report to my pdoc for him to consider adding an NDRI (like bupropion) to my escitalopram prescription..?

How about Tired constantly ? Are you in US/Canada ? Wont Rx it in the UK for depression - its not approved here any more unless you get it off label as a smoking cessation.
