CYP450 Enzyme Test - Any takers?

Posted by Petrucci914 on February 27, 2010, at 13:24:41

Hi everyone,

My psychiatrist asked me if I would be interested in this test and I said, "YES!," since I've always read about it but didn't know about availability. He told me it was covered by insurance and gave me the lab order. I scheduled it for Wednesday. I did some more research on it and a lot of places say that its effectiveness isn't proven and that no insurance covers it because it's "experimental."

If anyone has had it, did you get useful results? Did your insurance cover it? I'd be pissed if I got a bill for $600-1300. I emailed my insurance and if I don't get a response by Monday evening then I'm calling them to verify.

I've read that it costs anywhere from $500-1300.

If it does prove to be helpful, I think it would be a good test for a lot of people with mental health issues. A lot of us spend a ton of money on medications trying to find one that works. The hope is that this would take out some of the guess work!

Well, it's not a medication or anything, it's a blood test. It'll work because it'll give me information. It's whether the results show me something useful - whether I'm a fast, normal, or slow metabolizer as it pertains to certain enzymes.

This will explain it generally:

I suggested this to my psychiatrist a while ago, and he didn't seem to think they had the ability to do it in their facility. He didn't sound like he thought it was worth pursuing so I let it go, but I have wondered if it would be worthwhile. I have tried so many medications without success and it's frustrating that it's basically just trial and error. It would be nice to know what direction to go in and what medications would be a waste of time. I hope it is covered by your insurance, let us know how your test goes!

Maybe I read the link wrong but isn't it more about doses then the med? Sounds like a lot of people would have this test done. I'd pay out of pocket if there was a test that said which med and dose. Phillipa

It's about doses and meds. You may find that you are taking too high a dose, or not high enough. Or you may find a med that focuses on one enzyme of yours that is way out of whack.

Where are you having the test done? Can any lab do it?

I'm having the test done at a local hospital. It is just a blood draw but there are only a few clinics, I think, that can do the analysis. My hospital would ship it to MayoClinic to have that done.
