Remeron, middle insomnia, and weight gain...

Posted by elektrofiction on February 19, 2010, at 13:39:04

I have horrible middle insomnia-no trouble falling asleep but wake up every 1.5 hours throughout the night-I absolutely dread going to bed at night and wake up every morning feeling haggered. I am bipolar, ADD, and have sleep apnea-all well controlled on my meds and cpap. Amben, lunesta, sonata and the like either dont work or make me sleep walk (once down the block!). My pdoc just prescribed remeron for this at night. I have diabetes and have worked very hard to get it under control as well as taper my weight down. I am very scared of gaining any weight on remeron; however, I am desperate to sleep. Can anyone share their experiences with remeron especially regarding countering the weight gain associated with it use?

Meds: Lamictal, Nuvigil, Strattera, Tenex, Klonapin (prn)

I guess it could help but I heard it makes people crave carbs. You would have to control yourself. Could you cut back the doses on nuvigil or strattera and see if that helps?

How about gabapentin for sleep?

I've had the middle insomnia for quite a while now-way before I ever took nuvigil or strattera. I actually tried gabapentin for a few months, unfortunetly it did nothing. I don't know what to do!

Well I guess your doctor knows your condition and thinks it is safe. So you shouldn't worry. It can make people crave carbs and thats how they gain weight. If you get this feeling just resist it. The only other drug option I can think of is trazodone.

Remeron made me gain weight, but I'm having good success curbing my appetite using Zonegran

Remeron gives you carb cravings at the lower dosages. There are so many things for sleep that maybe you should try them first?

- Lunesta
- Ambien
- Seroquel
- Amitriptyline
- Thorazine/Largactil
- Nozinan
- Loxapine

Just some of the meds out there to try.

I have major sleep issues as well, so I feel your pain.

I do not like remeron as a sleep aid. It consistently caused me to dream very structured quest-like dreams. Never met the demands of a quest and work up out of sorts.

If you are a diabetic, how long are you comfortable being knocked out?
Stay away from trazadone--that can really make you oversleep.
If you take ambien, the halflife is 5 hours but once it kicks in you are incapable of accurate fine motor manipulations--oh dear, just realized i was writing all of this thinking you are an insulin dependent diabetic--never mind
