Diphenhydramine HCL and MAOIs - Any Reactions?

Posted by jedi on January 17, 2010, at 0:29:30

Hi Guys,
I did a Google Search on diphenhydramine and MAOI. There were thousands of hits showing the two medications as contraindicated. I have been taking Benadryl off and on for years as a sleep aid with Nardil. Of course you can't mix a decongestant or cough suppressant with the diphenhydramine HCL, but has anybody ever had a reaction from a MAOI and just straight Benadryl?

I guess diphenhydramine HCL can cause hypotension in some people. Since I don't get low blood pressure from Nardil or Benadryl, maybe I am just the exception to the rule.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody has had trouble with mixing the two meds?

Thanks,
Jedi

Serotonin syndrome is a possible reaction from combining the two drugs given that Benadryl inhibits the reuptake of serotonin. However, it does not seem to be at all common. I have never come across it. I used Benadryl for a week or so when I first started taking Parnate. I experienced no adverse effects.

I took it nightly since they started me on Parnate nightly before I was told it was a bad idea. I never had an problems (my DP the next morning was fine.)

I took DPH with Selegeline (EMSAM etc.) with no problem. I have no experience or knowledge of the interaction with the older MAOI's. BTW, I tried Cyproheptadine as well and found it was _longer_ lasting than DPH but gave a more natural sleep.

*** WARNING: MAOI's can be deadly with Dextromethorphan (cough-suppressant) & very dangerous with some oral decongestants (phenylephrine seems to be OK, Sudafed is an absolute NO). I would avoid taking brand-name products such as Benadryl, especially liquids, which are often combinations with the above. Look for plain diphenhdramine tablets, which are cheaper anyway.
