REM sleep too much can cause depression

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on January 16, 2010, at 20:07:32

I just started to realize when you dream alot, and go into a deep sleep, you wake up depressed kind of.

Lighter sleep you just doze off and rejuvinate.

Anyone?

I remember learning long ago that sleep deprivation can alleviate depression. Wouldn't be surprised if REM is involved.

I don't think that works on me anymore. For instance, I usually sleep 12-13 hours at home and I'm dog-sitting now for my aunt and only getting about 8 hours and my depression is worse (now due to life circumstances, but it was worse even before that). I've had times where I only slept about 4 hours and still didn't feel any better. Do you remember that thread about reactive vs. non-reactive depression? I wonder if sleep is just one more thing that some people are reactive to while others are not?

maybe it changes or adapts, one thing Prozac causes some [hypomania] when it get's late at night, and I have to take 10mg of Zyprexa, [by the way It makes you gain weight like alot]

Wellbutrin doesnt really have any manic effect's, the only thing it gives is ANXIETY...:(

I just noticed, when there is nothing going on in life [like right now for me] and I have all these "wonderful" dreams then have to wake up from them into reality, it kinda makes me depressed after I wake up. Long periods of REM I think can do this, you know I found a link but I forgot where it is...but it talked about this.

I think if life is going great for you, say for instance my brother who lives an american dream...I think dreams wouldnt really matter because you've got alot power and control over life. Don't let that be a trigger at all, it's just when depression is promitate in life, REM sleep has just gave me a bit of depression when I wake up...kind like "I don't want to wake up, but I have to"

Anyway's one thing I do recommened is 'projecting' a place that you know is 'imagination' but it's like a "matrix" you can go to and feel better and create support systems that release endorpin's, and it links to the real world. So it's not like some dream that you wake up and say "we'll that was some dream, now i just have to deal reality"

One thing, ALCOHOL causes depression to get worse [just in my case, there's the "relaxing effect" then the "depression phase" where everything is gloomy] and it eat's your brain if you drink too much liquor...

Well that's it for now!

Thanks for the response!

You know 'alcohol' kills REM sleep.
