Has anyone been on a combination of Nardil and a tricyclic (e.g., Nortriptyline, Amitriptyline, etc.)? The "standard" language is that they shouldn't be combined. However, seems like this combo can be tried very carefully according to some studies and books. I'm on Nardil and Lithium and I still feel dysthymia and anhedonia frequently. I had been on Nortriptyline before Nardil, and then tapered off Nortriptyline. There was a short period when I was on both, but nothing happened.

Yes, you can combine MAOI's and tricyclics. You don't want to use imiprimine in the combo-- it doesn't work out well for some reason. I've recently done alot of research on the topic trying to convince my doc to prescribe a tricyclic with my Parnate. Unfortunately, I failed, but I am now armed with a small library of research saying combining is possible (although I don't have anything specific to Nardil-- maybe another babbler does). I took Nardil and nortriptyline together. I believe most doctors will not prescribe together. I'm currently on Nardil and Wellbutrin,which are also contraindicated together. But it has helped so my pdoc continues to precribe despite the pharmacy giving me the warnings when I pick up the meds. My doc was not happy with prescibing but unusual combinations were my last ditch effort to get some relief. It was either that or the end of my trials. 10 years was getting to be a bit much to keep up the mission.

Hi Atypical,
as you may remember I have been on Lamictal 200mg + Nardil 75mg. I was on the Lamictal first, which is recommended. I'm currently coming off the Lamictal and and am down to 100mg. I'm feeling pretty crap and I'm hoping it's a transitional phase.Once I'm off the Lamictal I am increasing the Nardil to 90mg. I just wanted to try and be on one drug (Nardil), on the basis that Lamictal by itself didn't seem to do anything (that I remember or could perceive) and Nardil made a huge positive difference.
You might want to flow the idea of Lamictal+Nardil past your PDoc? Be very careful with Lamictal though, it's in a class of its own and is very hard to predict. See http://www.crazymeds.us/ and search for Lamictal.

I have also been on Nardil and nortriptyline together. I was also on Nardil + Wellbutrin for some time. The Wellbutrin seemed to help on some of the Nardil side effects. mainly the weight gain. I noticed no ill effects from either combination even though both are contraindicated. I did notice some aggressiveness on Wellbutrin. Have you had any additional side effects from Nardil + Wellbutrin?
