Apart from Lamictal and Lithium (and not counting anti-psychotics), do any of the other mood stabilizers help with bipolar depression at all? My mixed states are well controlled by Geodon but this depression keeps hanging on...

I tried Trileptal back before I tried lithium and it did nothing but cause the worst constipation I've ever experienced! But, my brain has been though so many chemical assaults and changes since then that another try may not hurt-- you've heard of it having anti-depressant effects?

Well first its best to understand they all arent mood stablizers, rather anti eplitic drugs, and when used in psycatry they are pretty much used for about 99.9 percent bi polar and mood stablization.
The class of them work on a similiar theory,it really is a trial and error thing, personaly i am like bulldog,u use gabpentin and klonopin which togther create a pretty solid mood stablizing combo.
I cant tolerate not a single other of the mood stablizer class

Have you ever used gabapentin and klonopin at the same time? Synergistic?

The only true mood stabilizer that was used originally for this purpose is Lithium. All the anticonvulsants and antipsychotics can act as mood stabilizers and are classified as such because of this. So many anticonvulsants and some antipsychotics are also considered in the class of mood stabilizers.

Zyprexa and especially Abilify are antipsychotics that are supposed to help with depression but I would not recommend it.
I'm assuming you have tried a number of antidepressants for your depression. If so, which ones have you tried?

I'm actually diagnosed Bipolar I, Mixed Type, but I control the mixed states pretty well with Geodon-- it's the depression that keeps holding on. I'm on Parnate now. Before that I've been on Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor, and Pristiq. In hindsight, I probably should have tried some others before I switched to an MAOI, since I can't experiment with the others now. I've also tried a lot of antipsychotics-- Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, and Geodon as well as Lithium and Lamictal.

It sounds like Gabapentin might be a good option. I don't usually have a problem with anxiety, though, so I'm not sure I need the Klonipin.

In my case I started on 100 mg three times a day. I built up a tolerance fairly quickly. I finally stabilized on 300 mg three times a day and I've been there for months. Nice thing at least for me it worked from day 1. Fairly benign drug.
