Have Meds killed my passions ?

Posted by rculater on December 23, 2009, at 4:40:04

I am trying to find out what my "passion" is in life but cannot think what it is and believe I dont actually have any or ever did ?
Has years of Meds turned me into a complete 9 - 5 Zombie ?
Whats your Passion ? Anyone else have difficulty finding your Passion ?

I don't know what ailment you may have, but depression alone can flatten affect and deplete one of interest, motivation, and energy. However, some drugs used to treat depression, notably the SSRIs and lithium, can do the same thing.

Passion? I guess there may be many reasons why someone would conclude that they have none. These might include the biological, the psychological, and the spiritual. It may be that you already have passion, but have yet to recognize it or allow it to surface in the absence of depression.

What drugs are you taking?

So many reasons to contribute this this. I have a passion for medicine. I loved nursing that was my passion now I'm retired and can't live the passion. And interestingly now I find myself knowing that I no longer want to be in the field as the stress levels are very high. Changes and all and can't physically do the job. Can meds change this no? But I find after living such a high paced life that now it's boring. Trying hard to find a new passion isn't easy. In my case I feel it's acceptance that is needed but I haven't found that. I say do what you love. And if a med helps you get to that point then search. by the way are you a med responder? Phillipa

I have been on and off meds for years. Longest constant stretch was about 2 years (Zoloft) Gained a lot of weight on them and became blunted emotionally.

Other meds ive tried ranging from 6 months to 6 weeks before i give up due to S/Es. Do i respond ? I don't know, its a merry go round, I cannot tolerate starting meds anymore and when i do manage to get them in my system, I want to be off them.

I will always get S/Es - weight gain, tiredness, sexual disfunction - for Dysthemia, I wonder if its worth it.

Ive now given up on them.

Thanks for your reply s.

you gave up on meds, i dont get it, your still depressed.what do you want out of life, you carnt take a med an give in because of side effects.they come as a job lot,you carnt have one without the other. i can be on my knees but i have to find something to do. sure its hard to feel passion .today i was at a lake side feeding wild birds, 2 years ago i was at that same lake drinking a bottle of brandy an driving.i go on my mountain bike, i cart say i like it but i do it, i go fishing, sometimes i dont remember going or comeing back, but i do it.if i could walk without pain i would walk miles.i do these things on my own ,i want to be on my own ,thats the way depressives are.you carnt fall out with yourself.

It wasn't until about 3 months after I had weaned off all meds (Prozac, Zyprexa) that I returned to my previous passions. They were few to begin with, since I think I've been depressed all my life, but there were a couple. All during meds, I abandoned even those into a world of apathetic nondepressed timewarp.

So now when I try new meds or new treatments, I be darn sure to stay away from anything where apathy is likely, and I will quickly pull the plug without any hesitation if I feel apathy coming on. I'm sorry, I may need a med to help me, but not that kind. There are some that won't do that.

I think SSRIs definitely can do that. For me, wellbutrin helped keep prozac from making me too numb, but it gave me bad SEs (especially the generic) so I decreased my dose after a while. I became much more apathetic and zombie-like and anhedonic. A hobby I had that I was really into simply stopped being interesting at all. I didn't realize until later that it happened, but I'm sure it was due to the prozac. Unfortunately never regained my passion even after being off meds for almost a year.
