I am trying 800 mg of Tegretol for anxiety/mood stabilization which is going well so far. Definitely feel calmer and mellow and a little cushion for my mood slips. I am on zoloft too and am interested to know as I read that combining the two could lead to serotonin syndrome. I have seen others say that it works similar to tricyclics but was wondering how the heck an anti convulsant do that?

Well that's a good question as tegretol is like trileptal been on that with no problems but can't tolerate tricyclics? Glad the combo is working well for you. Phillipa

Tegretol is chemically similar to TCA's. The TCA's also inhibit calcium and sodium chanels like tegretol. Conversely tegretol has some affinity for monoamine reuptake.
So tegretol and the TCAs have similar chemical targets, only with different affinities.

I had no idea. Thanks for the info know you know your're stuff so amazed was able to take low doses of trileptal with no TCA effects as they don't react well with me. Love Phillipa
