Hi
For the past few weeks I have had a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth. Also, nothing tastes the same. I assume that since I have a horrible taste that my breath is horrible too. I use mouthwash and chew gum but the taste remains. Brushing my teeth doesn't help. Nothing tastes as it should.
There are only two things I think that it could be:
1 - Ketosis from my 200 calorie a day anorexic diet
2. The nortriptyline
Has anyone had this from nortriptyline? I didn't the last time I was on on it.
Phillipa, I know that you have trouble with tasting. I can taste .... but it the taste is nasty. Even with my most favourite foods.
This effect is going to wreck havoc on my anorexia because I already I don't eat much in a day.
What could it be?
Thanks for your help.

Maxie yes your're right and it's worse. Altered taste can also come from so many meds it's hard to believe and even synthroid is one. I've searched for answers over six years now. Brain tumors, autoimmune diseases especially sjournes can do it to. What got me is the first search is that age decreases and alters taste but that's even sillier at your age. So in other words it seems that many meds can do this and illnesses also. Altered taste and smell are common. Seriously just put altered taste in google. And do write what you come up with. I emphatize with you we're opposite in that taste is or was my most enjoyment in life. Loved raw veggies nothing on them. I wouldn't even try to eat them now. Let me know Love Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa. I will start doing some searches.
This has never happened to me before and I am on meds that I have been on before. It doesn't make any sense. I wonder if I will ever get used to the disgusting taste. God, who would want to be around me if my breath is as stinky as it tastes!

Hi Maxie:
I have that, too. And my mouth gets so dry I can't speak. I drink tons and tons of water. I also eat lots of snacks..good ones mostly that I keep around for my g-baby. I chew gum, gargle with good stuff, all of that. I think the best antidote is food. If you're anorexic that is probably hard, but necessary...that taste is the pits..aarrrrghhhh I think it's the Parnate not the nortrip.
How do you like the nortrip? How much do you take? when do you take it? I think people have fewer problems with Parnate if they are on it. What do you think?

Hi Gayle
I take 75 mg of the nortrip at night with the hope that it will help me sleep. I don't think it does.
My mouth isn't dry. It just has an awful taste in it. I have tried drinking more water but it doesn't help. Even my coffee tastes funny to me.
Chewing gum tastes disgusting as well.I don't know if the Nortrip is helping or not. I have improved since I have been on it, but I had also just raised the Parnate to 80 mg. It's hard to know what is helping!
Thanks again for your positive posts. They mean a lot to me. *hugs*

Parnate can produce a bad taste, too. However, it was the combination of Parnate and desipramine (TCA) that produced the most potent effect. So, I imagine that Parnate combined with nortriptyline could do it, too. It has been so long that I have been on these drugs, I probably don't notice it anymore. Maybe it disappears, I don't know.

Thanks Scott. I didn't have the problem when I was just on the Parnate. I really hope it goes away. I don't know how I could ever get used to it because it's quite nasty!!!

Yeah, Nort put a bad taste in my mouth. I am already too skinny, but lost even more weight while on Nort. I had hoped I would gain weight on it. Instead, food tasted lousy and my appetite was gone.
The worst thing though was cigarettes. Dang, Nort made my cigs taste so bad. Nort is sometimes used for smoking cessation, and I can see why. Forget the whole brain chemistry thing, it just makes cigs taste like dirt.
On the bright side, it was the best pain reliever I have ever encountered. If someone has Lyme, arthritis, fibromyalgia, either amitriptyline or nortriptyline should be good tools if desired.

Wow, thanks for sharing. It did start with the Nortriptyline I think. Even toothpast tastes funny. I try to chew gum and it tastes funny. I hate the taste but I also worry that I have bad breath based on what I am tasting. I tried cough drops and I couldn't handle the taste. Of course my anorexia is loving this side effect. It's a lot easier not to eat now. I don't think I will be sharing this info with my doctor. ;)
This is the end of the thread.
