Serotonin and norepinephrine

Posted by SheilaC on October 28, 2009, at 16:59:17

Does anyone know the ratios of the various SNRIs? How much they effect Serotonin and norepinephrine?

I've noticed that Cymbalta and Pristiq do not bother my bladder like the SSRIs do (serotonin bothers my bladder).

Now that I have failed both Cymbalta and Pristiq I am looking for another med similar to Pristiq.

Effexor is approximately 30:1 (serotonin vs norepinephrine). I don't know of any data on Pristiq, but since it is a fancy version of Effexor, probably similar.

Cymbalta is 9:1 serotonin vs norepinephrine.

Savella is 1:3 serotonin vs norepinephrine.

I'm not sure I can take all the gas and stomach pain. Plus, sometimes my heart hurts. I found out today that my brother-in-law is taking Pristiq and he also has the bad gas, heartburn and some heart pains.

I'm not sure this is a good drug. At least not for me.

I wish there was another med besides an AD that would control or prevent depression.

From all the time I spend here do you feel your're treatment resistant? If so ever think of emsam? That one bypasses the gut and you can take it off and customize the sizes. Love Phillipa

Desipramine (a TCA) just acts on norepinephrine!
No known serotonin influence.
I consider it an anchor of my cocktail that I am currently pleased with.
I am at a high dose of it -- 300 mg/day.
The available pill strength starts as low as 10 mg, if I recall correctly.
Now, I will admit I have cardiac effects from it (heart beat over 100/min, palpitations, nervousness), but they are controlled with an addition of the beta blocker nebivolol/Bystolic.

Good luck!

I find high dose neurontin helps. Lamictal helps some. I find a stimulant vyvanse helps.

In one study I read venlafaxine caused similar increases in extracellular serotonin and norepinephrine in one part of the brain. I think cymbalta feels more potently serotonergic despite the affinites.

Im at 100mg desipramine and the headaches and nausea im getting are making me want to stop it.
In your experience, does the beta blocker help with the headaches? Feels like at the end of the day when the blood level is probably getting lower that I get these awful headaches.
I think this may have something to do with coffee but Id hate to give up my morning coffee.
