agomelatine issue

Posted by clipper40 on August 30, 2009, at 3:26:39

I've been wanting to try this but I'm hesitating because of the warning not to take it if you have any autoimmune conditions. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is autoimmune but it's fairly easily treated so if agomelatine made the condition worse, then I'd just take more thyroxine. What concerns me though is the possibility that it might lead to another more serious autoimmune disorder since I'm obviously susceptible.

I'm really agonizing over this because I think it would be a great medication for me for several reasons (depression, insomnia, sleep cycle disturbances, SSRI apathy etc.). Anyone have any advice to give me on this?

Have you tried all the SSRIs? What about Wellbutrin or the SNRIs? Or amitriptyline or nortriptyline?

Sorry I can't answer your question about Agomelatine.

On the topic related to your auto immune disease. Have you heard of using low dose naltrexone LDN for treatment?

I am curious about this. Is there an Internet resource you can suggest to find out more about this?

Thanks.

I hope LDN helps.

Once upon a time, LDN was thought by some to be an augmenter of antidepressants.

Since hasimotos is the most common thyroid disease effecting so many does this mean since autooimune system fights our own body that we catch less or the oppositite or doesn't the thyroid count been so confused on this issue. One doc told me it wasn't an autoimmune disease. Is hasimotos why no responses to meds as the body fights off the foreign ingrediants in meds? Phillipa

I think having autoimmune disorders makes us more prone to catching other things. I have hashimotos and MS.

Gosh. I didn't know.

You have one heck of a strong will to live. I hope it pays off for you soon.

Somebody mentioned using low-dose naltrexone (LDN) as a modulator of the immune system to reverse the autoimmune condition. Do you know anything about that?

Maxie so it's true. These professors one summer hiking on an island said that made me less likely to catch things. Do you feel it's other autoimmune diseases or diseases in general. See My thoughts were well if the autoimmune system rejects self it will surely reject foreign substances. I hardly ever get colds or flus? Still in remission I hope? Do you take any meds or not necessary? I know asked you that a long time ago. Love Phillipa

Yes, I've tried the other meds and I have an interest in LDN. Thanks for the link.

I don't remember where I read this and now I've only been able to find one abstract that mentions it. Because of this, and because ramelteon doesn't list autoimmune conditions as a contraindication, I'm not really worried about this any longer.

Here's the one link that I was able find but I think that the author is just assuming agomelatine will behave like melatonin. (check out the second to last sentence)

http://biopsychiatry.com/agomelatine-insomnia.htm

I sent an email to Servier to see what they say about it but I'm no longer afraid of trying agomelatine.

Also, I didn't know that LDN was no longer considered to have antidepressant activity. Bummer.

No, I've never heard of that. Something to look into though. Thanks!
