Due to private issues I can no longer afford to pay out of pocket for Lunesta, and am looking for a cheap alterative to it (I loved Ambien CR, but also expensive). I cannot take Seroquel (expensive) nor Trazadone (hang over).
I really need advice of some names I can bring up to my doctor. He's mention restoril (generic name tamezapam?) in the past. How is clonidine for sleep?
Any other suggestions?
I'm out of meds in two weeks and cannot sleep without something.

I like sonata (now in generic). It's quick acting and short acting (4 hours). So if staying asleep in not a problem....

Gibbons try the restoril. It's benzo like but hear it works well. Love Phillipa

Benzos are effective for sleep and at least in my case seem to work better; however, I think the belief is that the newer drugs ambien, lunesta, sonota are better sleep aids in that they have less of an effect on sleep architecture. I think this is the case anyway.
Sonota is available as a generic and you can take an additional dose if you awake early say 4am, but not beyond that (Depends on your normal waking time I assume)
On the natural front, there have been a lot of reports about Valerian Root as an effective sleep aid. You might want to also take a look at the alternative boards.

Thanks, for everyone's suggestions. I'm going to bring these up with my doctor and see what is suggested after I spend some time price shopping too...lol. My other drugs cost way too much money and those I have to have, but I guess I have to sleep too.
tonyz, I have tried alternative means and none seem to work, Valerian Root, Melatonin, etc.

Hi,
Elavil (amitriptyline) is a very good sleep aid.
Best regards,

Remeron in small dosages 7.5 - 15mg works well as a sleep aid for some people. I don't know if it is available as a generic or cost. Since it is marketed for major depression, you would have to check it along with the other things that you are taking.
Temazepam (Restoril) does work really well as a sleep med, but just be aware that is a benzo and shouldn't be taken long term.

There's also OTC doxylamine succinate (Unisom), which is better than diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in my opinion.
