HELP .... extreme HYPOTENSION on NARDIL????

Posted by UGOTTAHaveHOPE on August 4, 2009, at 14:31:00

Two weeks ago, I increased from 45mg of Nardil to 75 ... I wanted to do it because one of my friends is 250 pounds (like me) and said he doesn't feel anything from Nardil unless he takes between 75-90. My current side effects are 1) daytime sedation, 2) insomnia, 3) extreme hunger, 4) constipation, and 5) hypotension. However, despite all these side effects, my mood appears to be better.

URGENT: Over the last two days, I have felt extreme hypotension. In other words, I felt the normal hypotension when getting up, but then I felt an extreme case of it 5-10 minutes later.Yesterday when I was at work, I got out of my car and was dizzy. The sun was bright and everything I saw was either very white or blacked out. I walked toward the entrance, and lost my balance twice, stumbling into the wall twice. When I entered the building, I fell up the stairs. This continued for another 10-15 minutes. I felt like I was dying. Then when I left, I also had another small bout with it. I ended brushing my car against a row of trash cans and also a yellow parking pole.

Again, I am used to feeling a little bit of hypotension every time I stand up, but nothing this extreme.

Any thoughts on what may have happened?

Anything I could do to remedy the situation?

THANKS

What happened to 60mg!

:-)

You probably raised the dosage too fast. I would reduce it back to 60mg temporarily. Nardil inhibits its own metabolism. The more you take, the steeper is the slope of increased blood levels. 45mg to 60mg is a much greater jump than is 30-45mg. Going from 60mg to 75mg is greater still. Your body will need time at 60mg to make adjustments to offset the hypotensive effect of Nardil. You should really give the new dosage several weeks to work. If you would instead like to target 75mg as soon as possible, I would remain at 60mg for at least a week.

If hypotension remains a problem, you can use a drug called Florinef (fludrocortisone) to keep your blood pressure up. Hopefully, you would not need it indefinitely. You can try to discontinue it at some point.

Scott; I thought you had taken Nardil as high as 105mg? Did you ever experience hypotension like this?

Anyone else go over 75 feel anything like this?

I was like that at 45 mg except worse, i would get to the blackening out stage and then wake up on the ground usually with a headache thanks to hitting my head on everything on the way down. SO i pretty much had to stay in bed all the time on nardil.

Hi,
I STARTED Nardil at 75mg/day (because of desperation). This side effect your feeling sounds extreamly similar to mine. It lasted 3 weeks then I was ok. After 75mg I slowly raised until 105mg without ever having hypotension "crisis'" again.
.. It was like BAM 75mg and WOW, I had to walk around like a 150 year old man crouched over for a long time until my body got used to it.
I hope your body gets used to Nardil and this side effect goes away.
I had many terrible times at the begining of 75mg where I was awake but blacked out or half blacked out. I answered my door once from a seated position and never saw the person, even after a minute..
Good luck, I hope your body can adjust soon.
PS. Your side effects "1) daytime sedation, 2) insomnia, 3) extreme hunger, 4) constipation, and 5) hypotension" were IdentiCaL to mine. Ask your Pharmasist for constipation help. Hunger sucks(a reason I quit it), Insomnia(sleeping pill merry go round), Daytime Fatigue was horrible for the first month and almost as horrible for the rest of the year I was on it. Alertec(provigil) wa smy only combatant (high provigil doses when driving or....)

Good luck again, and now Im on Parnate which does not have the fatigue anymore.

Hi Hope,

Hypotension was problematic when I ramped up my Nardil dosage rapidly after washing out a recent failed Parnate trial. But, the hypotension was just a start-up side effect that lasted a week or so. I went from zero to 90 mg/day of Nardil in about one week in order to stop my depression pronto.

I used some table salt on my tongue to increase my blood pressure as needed. Worked fine. I put some salt in an old med bottle to carry in my pocket. Those dizzy, starry vision, and wobbly knees episodes are kinda scary, aren't they.

Id been on Nardil for about three years prior to my Parnate trial. I tried the switch in hopes of losing my Nardil-induced fifty pound weight gain and erectile dysfunction.

I gave Parnate a three month chance to work on my bipolar depression. But, apart from a couple days at start-up, and a couple more days six weeks into the trial, Parnate left me constantly depressed. On the plus side, I started to lose some weight on Parnate and it solved my ED. Ironically, however, Parnate caused premature ejaculation.

More details than you probably wanted to know.
: )

Has anyone experienced any muscle twitches on Nardil?

Are all these side effects, do they go away?

Please share any info. Thanks.

Yes, I had a lot of those jerks on Nardil and they didn't go away..I just got used to them..however, I had to discontinue my nardil trial. Once you know what they are and they're not harmful, it makes them a bit easier to ride them through.
