St. John's Wort

Posted by morganpmiller on July 26, 2009, at 20:40:14

Here's another that should be on the alternative board but I posted here because it is more likely to get seen here.

Are there any success stories here with St. John's Wort? It appears to have potential as a fairly powerful antidepressant. And, if the mechanism of action is what it appears to be, you would think it would work for even severe cases of depression. I am wondering if there is a way to intensify the effect of SJW so that it acts more like a powerful AD, by simply using high doses. I am sure someone has tried this before.

I tried it for a while, and it was like a very weak antidepressant. I think the brand that I was using was far too weak to be of any clinical use. They say that you have to get a brand that has both high hypericin AND high hyperforin. BTW, did you get my babblemail Morgan? How do I check it?

I didn't know there were two active compounds. Anyway, I tried it about 12 years ago and all it did was make me sensitive to sunlight. But I'm not sure if it had both of the aforementioned compounds present.

Like 2 days ago. Do you have a separate email address or some instant messenger program like AIM/MSN?

Perhaps you could add 5-HTP or even low dosage lithium. Of the gazillion things that lithium does, enhancing serotonin activity is one of them.

I tried 2 years ago, before I went on SSRI's. It had an effect at the time, causing SSRI like effects at a lower dosage and more energetic effects on a higher dose. I wouldn't really say it made feel better in the months, I was on it. I tried St. John's wort recently and it has absolutely no effect on my mind whatsoever. It's worth trying as the side effect profile is pretty safe and it's pretty cheap. But it didn't bring me any kind of remission really.

It made me sensitive to sunlight too.

Apparently the cattle and sheep that eat it get the same problem.
