ADD Med Help

Posted by GT50 on June 26, 2009, at 13:18:11

Hi All,

I was first diagnosed with ADD in 2nd Grade. As an adult I have been diagnosed with Dysthimia, ADHD, Purely Obsessional OCD, GAD, and SAD.

I have been back on 30mg of lexapro for the last year. It helps most with my obsessional thoughts and a little with the GAD and depression.

I really need to find a medication to help with my ADD that does not make my other symptoms worse.

I have tried the following meds:
Wellbutrin - Not much help to concentration
Desipramine - No help in concentration, or motivation. I could not get past a low dose do to increases in depression and anxieity
Strattera - No help in concentration, or motivation. Increased irritability, depression and anxiety
Adderall - Major anxiety and depression
Dexedrine - Dysphoria far outweighed benefits.
Ritilan - Dysphoria far outweighed benefits.
Memantine - No noticeable help with ADD symptoms,

These are the options that I know of please comment on them or give me other ones:
1. Emsam or selegiline. I worry that this will increase my anxiety.
2. Add Mirapex. Maybe will help with motivation.
3. Add mood stabilizer like lamictal to combat dysphoria when taking Amphetamine

Thanks for any help

I've tried Emsam for ADD. It didn't really do anything for me.

Didn't notice any anxiety effects. Just felt a little weird on it.

Of course everyone reacts differently, but I have anxiety reactions to desipramine and strattera (but not to adderall at 10mg or less).

BTW, supposedly if you get past the first month with strattera the side effects go away. Maybe you could try combining something with the strattera for the anxiety (buspar, or an ssri maybe?)

Hi! Not sure what second grade means--I've got ADD (inattentive) and just am stopping a trial of Dexedrine. It worked (the spansules that is) except it was pooping out an I wasn't willing to take it to the max and have it poop out on me then!

Just finishing my first week of provigil and am beginning to like it. It might be enough for me.

I keep bringing up mirapex to my pdoc and he seems to have this reoccurring, intermittent hearing loss... :) (I did like the dopamine effects of the dex.)

Good luck, and I'm interested to her what you do next.

2nd grade = 2nd year of elementary school

s/he was diagnosed then, at about age 6-7

pretty sure that's all GT50 meant :-)

PS - I have inattentive ADD, too. I am one of the fortunate ones as Strattera works well for me and did from the start. Been on it for 5.5 years straight and it still works.

Unfortunately I received no benefit from strattera

Wow, you have been around the block with medicines that have kept leading you into a void.

Have you thought about suggesting Desoxyn to your pdoc?

It is a stretch, but worth a try.

Good Luck
