I'm a 33-year-old female with apparently high intelligence but very uneven achievements. I've gotten in quite a bit of trouble at work and school (I'm a returning adult student) for missing details. I'm a chronic procrastinator, and have worked on this with my therapist for several months.
Based on the continuation of symptoms, my therapist has suggested that I might have ADD and could benefit from trying medication.
Because it might take a while to get in for ADD testing, she suggested that I might go to my general practitioner and ask for a medication trial. (She is willing to support the diagnosis if the gp gets in touch with her.)
I'm already on Effexor, (non-XR), 50 mgs, twice a day. I don't want to take Straterra because of this, although I would expect a GP to be most comfortable prescribing Straterra. Plus, I was on Strat. for 3 days in the past and it made me incredibly irritable. Instead, I would prefer to try a short-acting stimulant, something that lets me focus when I need to and be myself later in the day.
Do you have med suggestions? Anything that works well with Effexor, or not? And how to talk to my MD about this?

In reply to possible ADD, what to take with Effexor?, posted by CaffeinePoet on June 28, 2009, at 12:19:49
Hi Caffeine Poet,
For what it's worth, I found that a short acting stimulant (dexedrine) left me ragged and dyphoric when it wore off. I am having luck on provigil (one week), so if energy and motivation are not the biggest issues for you....

hey floatingbridge,
how is provigil helping you?
energy is an issue for me. when i face something that will require intense concentration i end up feeling drained and tired.

Hi CP,
With focus and, I think with mental energy (does that sound too silly?). Wakes me up. Right now, I am in a unique situation of having had the flu for 3 weeks and other complicating factors such as tapering off of 45mg of Dexedrine to 10mg, to none (I hope). My idea, not my shrink's.
I'm still working on the energy piece.
