Nardil Insomnia Help!!

Posted by n_wolfie on June 17, 2009, at 17:11:43

I was taking trazadone for my Nardil induced insomnia, and it gave me an awful hangover, so much so that I was dysfunctional the next day. My sleep schedule has always been erratic, daytime naps, insomnia. My doctor told me waking and going to bed at the same time was more effective than any sleeping pill, and to stop the trazadone. I've really been trying. I go to bed at 11pm, no naps (even though i'm falling over tired) and every night I wake up at 3am. What can I do? I can barely function during the day, in fact, right now I need to go take a nap, (because I got 4 hrs sleep last night) which is going to screw up my sleep tonight! Never getting a continuous 8 hours of sleep is as bad as the depression, I can't tell if I'm forgetful because I'm tired or depressed. I'm also afraid of what it's doing to me on a neurochemical basis. My doctor won't let me take klonopin or ambien because they are both habit forming long term.

Your doctor is a bit of a crackpot. Sleep hygene works in some situations but definately not all. For me, it doesn't matter whether I stick to a rigid sleep schedule or not I still have nasty insomnia.

I get really irritated when people tell me about sleep hygeine. It's sure not like that with me. I can feel myself being dragged out of deep sleep by something or other.

Very few people can take Nardil without some kind of a sleep aid. The last few years I was on it, 25mg of Seroquel was the answer for me.

isn't nardil dangerous with trazadone?

I totally get that docs want to steer clear of habituating meds like benzos but there isn't much that trumps a good nights sleep. Seroquel sounds like a possibility. I would push the benzos if the seroquel, or something else, doesn't work. Remeron works for me, but I'm pretty sure you can't take it with an MAOI.

Lunesta works for me- doesn't make me "feel tired" but when I need to go to sleep I can..... However, my mood still is in the gutter.....

Though the two meds are officially contraindicated, Traz is one of the most common sleep aid medications prescribed with MAOIs. I took low dose trazodone for years while on Nardil. It made me groggy in the morning, which Seroquel can also. Couple good stiff cups of coffee would knock out the drugged feeling for me. I don't think I would take a regular high dose of Traz with Nardil. But then trazodone is a crappy antidepressant anyway! Just my opinion.

i'd try low dose of trazadone, mirtazapine, or clonidine. might try cyproheptadine or gapapentin too
