Small dose Abilify vs. Lg dose

Posted by alchemy on June 16, 2009, at 1:11:09

A few years ago I tried Abilify, starting @ 2mg and moving up slowly. Even at a low dose it seemed (?) to have a negative effect. At larger doses it definitely did.
Now, my psych wants to add a small dose to my current cocktail because he's had success with it and thinks if I just take a sm dose it will be different
So....any thoughts? experiences?

Well, 2 mg seemed fine as part of my cocktail. As soon as it was pushed up, I experienced negative effects--weight gain, emotional flattening (or is that called blunting), other weird things--until I was crying daily (at 10mg) and pdoc said, whoops, blew it, and withdrew me. Feel much better; however, anxiety crept in. So not sure if the 2mg was good for me after all or what. My experience....

good luck!

I say if it didn't work before why again? Sometimes I just get angry that docs don't believe their patients responses. I wonder if he ever tried the med himself or would? As a matter of fact I wonder how many pdocs take any of the meds? Phillipa

I don't think any pdocs, except ones experiencing depression, etc. themselves take any. Most, certainly, in my experience, didn't even believe in my withdrawal symptoms. But maybe this pdoc has a reason to think a small dose would help. (And then again....) (Now that doesn't mean that one should not exercise a patient's right to just say 'no'.)

Alchemy, what were your symptoms on 2 mg Abilify?

Thank you for your info! I probably wasn't on the 2mg to know what the effects were. I'm wondering why there are all the commercials & my doctor's experience that augmentation w/ Abilify can be so helpful.
I guess 2mg might be worth a try. I know that a higher dose would screw up my head so I am hesitant, but I am running out of options.

Alchemy,

I don't know. Abilify seems to be one of the drugs of the moment. The first thing my doc prescribed (at the 2 mg for months). I've seen the ads, too. If you're not sure, you could ask the board about other mood stabilizers or AP's. Many out there.

Good luck!
