Was this a Mixed Episode? Verapamil Helping Some

Posted by Frustratedmama on May 30, 2009, at 9:15:28

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to report that I am continuing to have some success with verapamil at 80 mg 3-4 times a day! Only side effect is a little GI back-up (IYKWIM). I am also a little bit fatigued and actually feeling a bit down (instead of angry now) so will be SLOWLY adding a bit of cytomel back into the mix! Wish me luck as I do all of you! I will continue to check in here often as this board has kept me alive the last few months of hell. Also, I should add that I am taking adderall xr 10 mg (for adhd) and lunesta 2 mg at night for sleep..... I also still wake feeling crummy but within a few hours I calm down..... (at least for a bit!) Then I remember to take my next dose (easy to remember when you feel like crap). So, for now I am happy to say that I am getting some temporary relief in the form of sadness (which compared to anger is delightful!)Now to get the depression under control.

So, question for all of you out there- Was this a mixed episode? The feeling of highly energized anger with a need to lash out at the world- the feelings of out of contol- the horrible anger and irritability- the anxiety, the inner restlessness, etc...... any guesses?

Dear FM, so glad you are getting some relief. The sadness isn't much fun.

Well, this does sound like it could be a mixed episode, but you know that already. I'm wondering if there is a cyclical component. Have you ever kept a mood journal? What does your pdoc think? (My experience is pretty limited.)

THANKS CANDACE!!!!!

I AM HORRIBLE WITH KEEPING MOOD JOURNALS (I LOSE THEM OR FORGET TO LOG MY MOOD- THINK THAT MAY BE THE ADHD-LOL) MY PDOC DOESNT TALK ABOUT DIAGNOSIS WITH ME AS MUCH AS TREATMENT- NOT SURE WHY (MAYBE DUE TO THE FACT THAT "IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THE DIAGNOSIS IS AS LONG AS MEDS WORK") I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS THINK REGARDING MIXED EPISODE FOR MY OWN REASONS (I HAVE A CHILD ON THE PDD SPECTRUM).....IF THIS WAS A MIXED EPISODE THEN THAT WOULD ACTUALLY CHANGE DIAGNOSIS TO BIPOLAR RIGHT? RIGHT NOW THE DIAGNOSIS IS ADHD, MOOD DISORDER NOS, AND ANXIETY... NOT SURE IF A MIXED EPISODE IS ACCOUNTED FOR WITH MOOD DISORDER NOS OR NOT?

I WILL BE SURE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED!
AGAIN, THANKS! (BTW- CAPS ARE JUST SO IT'S EASIER TO READ- HOPE ITS OK)

Dear FM,

I've heard and read that mixed episodes are very often misdiagnosed. I'd like to hear what others here have to say about your question.

Caps o.k. with me!

Glad the anger is gone but was the sadness there all the time too? Was the anger covering it up? And the sadness is not depression. Do you have reasons to feel sad? As that is a normal emotion. The bipolar the others will have to answer. Please update and wait til you get your answer. Phillipa

I THINK MAYBE THE SADNESS WAS THERE ALL ALONG (NOT SURE ABOUT THIS- GOT ME THINKING THOUGH!). I WOULDN'T SAY I HAVE ANY "REASONS" TO FEEL SAD OTHER THAN I AM (BY THAT I MEAN THAT IT'S NOT SITUATIONAL)..... IT'S LIKE I CRY EASIER NOW.... I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT THE ANGER AND INTENSITY WAS COVERING IT UP! GOING TO GET MY CYTOMEL TODAY TO SEE IF THAT WILL HELP AGAIN! STILL CANT GET BABBLEMAIL TO WORK BUT WOULD LOVE TO BABBLEMAIL..... I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED! THANKS PHILLIPA

I've read a lot of your posts recently, and it does not strike me that you are dealing with bipolar disorder. Have you checked into intermittent explosive disorder?
