I have started having anxiety attacks and the doctor want me to take Ativan three times a day. I would rather treat myself with alternative methods. I am not sure of what to take. Do you have any suggestions?

Recently, I have been having serious anxiety attacks along with treatment-resistant depression. My doctor and I decided to start on a whole new regime of meds, but it was going to be weeks until they kicked in at therapeutic levels.
So, my doctor suggested that since I was in CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) anyway, that I ask my therapist to take a break from the CBT and focus solely on depression counseling to help me through until I could see a benefit from the meds. Turned out to be a great idea and it stopped me from hurting myself anymore than I already had.
My suggestion is to find a good therapist and see him/her regularly until you have a sense of some control over your situation. You probably won't get full control, but a good therapist can be invaluable.

I agree with greywolf, with this proviso . .
don't mess with panic attacks, if left unchecked they can be really debilitating.
Cut out all stimulants, for most of us that means caffeine.
If the above works - great. If not, use the benzo, and don't feel guilty about it.
just my 2 cents . . . .
This is the end of the thread.
