Klonopin vs. Xanax

Posted by Cseagraves on May 23, 2009, at 17:27:06

Hi All.

Have to see pdoc this Wednesday. Was going to ask to switch from xanax to klonopins for anxiety. Can anyone here with experience with these meds tell me the difference.

Does Klonopins help with sleep. If so, better than xanax? I've taken it a few times, but didn't notice much. Was wondering about others experiences. My main concern is sleep since anxiety will overrule my sleep. Currently taking .25 mgs of seroquel and 1.5 of xanax for sleep. It knocks me out initially, but hard to stay asleep.

If your taking klonopin to control anxiety during the day, what kind of dosages are good?

Thanks,
Courtney

Suggestion??? What I did with the xanax as only slept and still do in four hour stretches is to take a lower dose of xanax when wake after four hours. For me klonopin depressed me horribly. Phillipa

Okay, I've been taking clonazepam for 22 years, 0.5mg tid. I tried zanax and ativan but found clonazepam smoother, meaning my anxiety was held at bay and I felt more stable-- less up and down so to speak.
I find it also helps alleviate start up anxiety when beginning a new med. And, especially when stopping a med such as, ahem, Nardil :-)

I still enjoy an active lifestyle with zero side-effect from the clonazepam so it can't be that toxic!!

Take care, Rick

I don't think they are toxic they have been around for too long for anxiety. Not like nardil that was originally didn't someone say for TB? Now that is off label to me. Phillipa

I've been on both. I found Klonopin was better for lesser feelings of anxiety and for taking the edge off at bedtime.

Xanax works better for me overall. It's hard to explain, but my anxiety has a strong physical effect on me--the physical manifestations of nervousness/anxiety are very evident, and Xanax seems to deal with that better.

People have really different reactions to different benzos. I find valium to be really depressing but like klonopin. I think one of the main considerations is the half-life of the benzo. Klonopin has a very long half-life so should avoid ups and downs. It is prescribed for sleep but doesn't really do that much for me even though I take one at bedtime. I just haven't gotten around to tapering off it since I am tapering off seroquel. Remeron is the only thing that has worked for me for sleep. It knocks me out and keeps me asleep. I have not had appetite problems with it. Some people also think it's a good AD especially when combined with effexor or pristiq- which I also take.

They are both benzos. Klonopin (lorazipam) has an 18 hour half-life and Xanax is much shorter, can't remember what it is. That means Klonopin will be working around the clock. For some that's a good thing, others may not need that. Only you can decide. Just remember that once you're taking Klonopin regularly, not always easy to back off.
