Buspirone Dosage

Posted by Garnet71 on May 13, 2009, at 11:28:41

I thought all this time I was taking 60 mg a day of buspar, but I looked at the bottle the other day and realized I am only taking 30 mg a day. Isn't 60 mg the max. effective dose? I wonder why I thought I took 60. Or maybe the PDocRN accidentally changed it when she snuck me in for that free appointment--if it was planned I know she would have discussed that with me first. Probably just me being mistaken, but I threw away all the old bottles of course but am wondering where the hell I came up with the thought i was taking 60 mg....Im confused now! Maybe I could up the dose and see if that helps w/anxiety.

Anyone here take 60 mg of buspirone?

That sounds like a plan - I'm going to call old PDoc and ask for higher dose of Buspirone. (why didn't I think of this before??????) But what if that doesn't work--then what? But what if he tells me to get lost, considering our last conversation? lol Or maybe risk asking for more Xanax till new PDoc appt..that I might have to cancel..because I have no money. $

I'm SCARED of taking another xxRI! I don't know if I want to go back there again; take the chance. Fatigue is one thing I absolutely cannot deal with right now. Too much to do; too little time!

Hi,

I've been on Buspar for 15 years.
My dosage is 20 mg + 20 mg.

Originally my doc prescribed 15 mg + 15 mg + 15 mg,
but I made a change for practical reasons.

A big man would obviously need a higher dose than a tiny woman.

But normally there is no reason to take more than 40 - 45 mg of this medicine a day.

Best regards,
X-ray

X-Ray if You've become tolerant of benzos so they make you tired instead of give energy like they used to would Buspirone work for anxiety? Was on it years ago in combo with benzos but then they only gave 5mg a day? Please reply. What is all this talk about possible psychosis that I've read about with buspirone? Thanks Phillipa

Hi Philippa,

Buspar is good for anxiety, but it is a mild drug.
You might need a more potent drug.

I'm sceptical about buspirone and psychosis.
This drug has few side effects.

Hi,

I found this report about psychosis with buspirone:

Journal of Psychopharmacology, Vol. 7, No. 3, 295-300 (1993)
DOI: 10.1177/026988119300700311

Acute exacerbation of psychosis with buspirone?

Thomas R. E. Barnes

Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School Academic Unit, Horton and Gordon Hospitals, UK

We report a patient with schizophrenia who suffered an acute exacerbation of psychosis when treated with buspirone to alleviate anxiety. This psychotic reaction appeared to be dose dependent. Discontinuing buspirone resulted in a rapid improvement of psychotic symptoms. Re-introduction of buspirone at a modest dose helped to alleviate anxiety without exacerbating his schizophrenic symptoms. The other case studies of psychosis due to buspirone are reviewed and possible mechanisms for this association are discussed, particularly the role of dopamine and serotonin.

Best regards,
X-ray

Hi Garnet!
I always forget to talk about the Buspar...but it was the first med I was put on back in 1995, before the Paxil... It was new at the time in the Canada and I was on the maximum dose of 60mg...if I can remember well... and it worse my panic attack problems at the times and worse also my anxiety...

If you already take a benzo drugs before, Buspar will be innefective, a lot of studies proof that point, I can't give a link to them, but on pubmedia they have tons of studies about the Buspar med...

For what I know and my own experience, that's not good for social phobia and panic disorder... but it may help some people who never touch a benzo meds before and people who have depression with a little bit of anxiety...but not usefull for GAD or SAD as I write before...

I think it's a 5-HT1A partial agonist... They claim it's not addictive... but they forget to also mention that's it's not very helpfull also...

That's what I think... and for what I heard from my Family Doctor and the new PDoc, they dont RX often now and it's somewhat not use anymore to treat anxiety problems (SAD, GAD, PD...)...

I hope it will work on you...good luck ;-)

Hi Denise,

Those are difficult questions for me to answer.

I had been on a low dose of flufenazin for twenty years,
when I met with a new psychiatrist fifteen years ago.

I was an extremely angry man at the time,
and the doc switched flufenazin to buspirone.

"It's been shown that Buspar is effective against anger",
the doctor said.

Well, I really didn't notice much difference.
I have never felt Buspar in my body.

But I think this drug has a stabilizing effect on the mind.

Buspar takes two to four weeks to start working.
The minimum dose would be 3 x 5 mg a day for positive effects.

Best regards,
X-ray

P.S. Just switched Buspar to 0,5 mg of Fluanxol (flupentixol).
