SAM-e for Anxiety ?????

Posted by Garnet71 on May 13, 2009, at 11:20:43

i hear alot about it's effectiveness for depression, but what about anxiety?

I need something and soon, because it seems I'm not able to handle stressors anymore, and anxiety is going up but I don't have very much Xanax at this point (they gave me .25 mg a day for 30 days which DOES NOT work when I get escalating anxiety like this). I don't have $300 to pay the new PDoc, and am about to make a decision to 1) buy St. Johns Wort today; or, 2) call old PDoc and get samples of Pristiq. I don't want to take Klonopin for the cognitve effects, thought that might be the best drug for me now in terms of my current symptoms.

I'm not sure what to do..feeling really stressed out right now/life hanging by a thread--this is not good. Im scared to take the Pristiq because of fatigue with my courseload and everything else. Can you augment Dextroamphetamine with Pristiq?

Or this could be PMS related-I'm not sure yet, but will find that out soon! lol

Or could I be getting anxiety from not taking Dextroamphetamine for 3 days? Does that make sense? Is that a withdrawal effect since anxiety symptoms coincided with not taking it? I tend to think it's more environmental these days and that the anxiety w/stopping the dexro is just a coincidence.

if the d-amp helps with anxiety, the SAMe might too. its usually stimulating so for people who find uppers to cause anxiety it doesn't help.

magnolia bark might be good for anxiety too

I would be cautious with SAM-e, while some people say it helps with anxiety, at higher dosages it is known to cause insomnia and if I remember irritability. Potentially at low dosages it can increase anxiety.

I suspect it is better for the types of depression where a person would have low energy and sleep a lot. If you are having anxiety I would suggest caution.

I have used it in the past and I thought it was helping but I didn't realize that it was effecting my sleep. I had to switch to more conventional means.

Not trying to add more stress to what you are going through, but you can check out this site and read some negative postings about people that have experienced negative side effects from SAMe.

I think I'm going to go with your advice Phillipa. I've never had PMS symptoms like this! I almost cried in Home Depot tonight when they couldn't match my paint.....with the same color I already did 1/2 the room with! ok, but I WAS there for over an hour at the paint counter. It was like a major operation--3 people had to work on this. lol You'd think they'd at least give me the 3 wrong match gallons for free.. to add to my collection of two dozen paint cans in my basement..lol. I love paint.

You know - my military doctors are the first one's who told me some people ONLY get anxiety at PMS time...maybe wait 2 more days. I don't know about st. john's wort. But for 10 bucks, hmm. tough decision.

Crying in Home Depot sounds kind of hormonal to me. That, or lack of sleep. Once when my Lunesta ran out and I didn't sleep for three days, I burst into sobs when the pizza guy brought me the wrong thing.

Please be careful with SAM-e. I took it once for a couple of weeks and it made me manic/sleepless. This might be rare, but as others have mentioned, it can happen.

Also, you might give the Pristiq a shot. If anything, it causes insomnia instead of fatigue in most people.
