Not when you take it, of course, but in the "off time." I take 1 mg Immediate Release at night, and I have noticed a real rise in my anxiety levels during the day.

Possibly. The term used to describe this effect is "rebound anxiety". It is exactly like a mini-withdrawal. When the Xanax leaves the system and uncovers the excitatory neurons, there is almost a springboard effect as the anxiety overshoots its baseline severity.
1. You can try using less at night so there isn't as high a peak concentration.
2. You can try using the XR version for the daytime to control the anxiety, and still take your night dose.
3. You can try using Seroquel instead of the Xanax at night. You can add the Seroquel 25-50mg first, and then taper the Xanax.

Yes.
As you say, the off period may be more anxious.
And then there is the long term effect of benzo use which, in some people, makes anxiety or fear much worse.
This may not apply to you, but is worth knowing in advance.

Hi,
The Xanax have a real short half-life, so what you are experienced is probably a withdraw problem...mean that your brains crave for another dose of Xanax... One advise, stay away of the Xanax...or maybe ask to be put on something with a more long half-life...The Valium is probably the best choice because you encounter less the craving and withdraw effect after a couple of hours... that's make it more easy to manage... Another thing, taking too much high dosage can also increase the anxiety and cause the reverse effect... I had severals bad experiences on the Rivotril...when I abused of it often...worsing my anxiety level...Well that's it...have a nice day !

I have found that with xanax that once you take it you have to continue with small doses throughout the day to avoid that bounce back anxiety

Hi to all the post.
Interesting. I take .5 of xanax during the day if needed and 1.5 at night for sleep. Seems like pretty low dosages, but am wondering if that is what is causing some of my anxiety.
It's the only thing that seems to help me sleep. Have either bad reactions or horrible dreams on everything I have tried. (Seroquel, trazadone, remeron, valium, ambien, etc.)
Whats the best way to tell if it is the xanax causing the anxiety? What would be the best way to ween off of xanax? It's the only med i am taking at present. I have a some 25mg seroquels left, do you think I could use those to ween off xanax?
Opinions? Advice?
Thanks,
Courtney

Also, what could I take during the day (herbal) to help ease anxiety if I try to ween off xanax? Am trying to come off of all meds and try a different approach.
Thanks,
Courtney

From what they say on Crazy Meds (crazymeds.us), you must use Xanax to wean off Xanax. But ask your pdoc, of course.

Hmmm. I took Xanax at night for a long time and I don't believe I ever had this kind of effect. Then again, I might've just not noticed.
I wonder if you might be better off with Klonopin, if you're taking Xanax every day. The half life is much longer.
