Wellbutrin good, but maybe add SSRI

Posted by Linda from Sweden on January 7, 2009, at 8:39:49

Hi, I am now on WB XL 300 mg, for 4 months, mono AD. Mostly good experiences, best AD so far for me (been on almost everything for 10 years). Very good to have normal feelings back again! Some bad days, WB is sometimes still a rollercoaster. I need a little more effect and stability right know, because of some incoming stress. So, as much as I hate (and maybe love!?) SSRI, I am thinking of adding this, maybe just a small dose. In my experience I think it must be Lexapro or Zoloft.

Any thoughts, experiences and advice in adding SSRI to the WB? I am also little afraid that even a small dose SSRI will override the WB, it doesnt feel like a very strong AD. What do you think?

Hi Linda,

I'm glad to hear that Wellbutrin has made you feeel better.

I would never add an SSRI drug, but I have no personal experience of this combo.

Medication Fact Book, The Carlat Psychiatry Report:
Wellbutrin, Drug-Drug Interactions:
Luvox (fluvoxamine) inhibits the metabolism of bupropion, possibly increasing levels.
Wellbutrin can increase levels of a variety of antidepressants, most notably Effexor.

I'm planning to try Wellbutrin myself in the near future, so I have this question.
Which drug do you take for sleep?

Best regards,
X-ray

P.S. I'm on Elavil and Buspar.

I take benzo for sleep, been on that for years unfortunately, but happily it has not been necessary with any major dose increase. WB is a bit of a rough ride in the beginning (after a week of honeymoon). If you are prone to anxiety and agitation, a benzo could be very helpful in the beginning.

Actually now I sleep better with WB than no AD, but I take the XL early in the morning, that is important I think.

Also I have read that someone dont like the generic, maybe something with the release of the XL formula.

Why wouldnt you add an SSRI?

From what I've read wellbutrin is often added to an SSRI for a boost. Lexapro and zoloft are good choices. Good luck and welcome to babble. Phillipa

Hello Linda,

There are a lot of websites where you can check the interactions between two drugs.
Why don't you try janusinfo.se?
I think that you are on the wrong track with this idea.

For stability, you could try a small dosage of Fluanxol (flupentixol).
0,5 mg in the morning might do the trick.

By the way, Buspar is a good drug for anxiety.
There is another option for you.

Best of Luck,
X-ray

Anyone have some personal experiences with WB+SSRI to share?

I did very well for three or four months on a combination of Wellbutrin and Zoloft. The combination of 150 mg WB and 100 mg zoloft was just right. WB on its own was way too stimulating and zoloft on its own caused some emotional flatness.

I kind of wish I hadn't switched. At the urging of my pdoc I tried Remeron and am now trying zoloft plus Lexapro, but I don't think it works as well as the welloft did.

I've heard good things about the combo Wellbutrin and Zoloft. I haven't tried them myself but I think there are lots of people who have. I think they call it "Zo-well".

Good Luck,

I have been on WB + Zoloft for 4 years - worked fine for me. Then I tried WB + Saint Johns Wort because the Zoloft also caused weight gain (80#) and now I am on WB + Cymbalta. Which is working fine for the last year.

So for me is been fine.
