yeast causes depression? quackery or real?

Posted by deerock on December 7, 2008, at 17:10:37

i went to a holistic md and she tells me yeast is causing my depression. sigh....

is there any truth to this? i am male but she says men get it all the time and it causes depression, foggy thinking and pains in the body, along with fatigue. i am thinking this might be a wild goose chase...but am sort of considering it.

of course i need to buy hundreds of dollars worth of supplements from her and see her every month.

Dear deerock,

She is talking about, "Candida". Virtually everyone is infected with it systemically. It is the fungus responsible for, "Thrush", which appears when one's immune system is compromised, as in HIV positive patients.

Does it cause Depression? Who knows? It is almost impossible to eradicate it from your body so you would be in for a long regimen of treatments.

Cordially,
YOGI

Deerock women get yeast infections if you know what I mean. Why not do a google search on yeast? Sounds like I just don't know. This is something that people have talked about for years. But never heard it linked to depression before. Love Phillipa

Very true. Candida overgrowth is a direct result of dysbiosis-- an alteration in the normal intestinal flora-- which can effect how our body absorbs nutrients like b-vitamins and amino acids.

As far as I am concerned, yes, yeast and a handful of other microbial invasions can definitely cause depression.

The yeast Candida is the bad one. It normally lives in small numbers, but can take over due to shifts in hormones, compromised immune system, mercury or lead exposure (they LOVE mercury, do you have any amalgam fillings?) and stress. How critters cause depression is by spilling their toxins into your bloodstream. Any kind of toxin getting into your brain is going to have you feel like crap. All the serotonin, NE, or DA manipulation in the world is not going to fix that.

There is a test you can do to find out. You don't have to guess or wonder. Go to www.metametrix.com; click on Test Menu; look for Organix Dysbiosis Urine. That's the test you want. It has a sample test report you can review as well so you can see in advance what kind of information comes from the test.

The critters live in a hostile stressed environment. They are adapted well to survive and hide. That is why other tests can show false negatives. Such as stool samples or blood candida antibody tests. An antibody test will only show if you are infected throughout your entire body. A stool sample on shows what is going on in the lower part of your colon. The urine sample, where you are not looking for the critters themselves, but rather their waste products, is the most accurate test.

Candida yeast leave a telltale signature from their waste byproducts (toxins) in your urine. In a normal healthy person, there should be only tiny almost undetectable amounts. If you are infected, you will see it clearly.

If infected, then you embark on herbal or pharmaceutical treatments to kill the critters.

The test will also show if you have some other microbial infection instead. Then you can take tests to find out which of several bacteria you are infected with.

The critters are normal and fine in small numbers. They even serve useful purposes. But when their numbers become too large, they wreak havoc on your intestines, allowing undigested stuff into the blood and allowing their waste byproducts into your blood. That just doesn't feel good. You feel, well, depressed.

What I feel is quackery is when a medical doctor doesn't look at basic things like this, when they just pull out a prescription pad. That's quackery. Just my opinion though.

You know what deerock, try and get all yeast out of your diet first, for a few weeks, eat lots of yoghurt, the real stuff, and try some probiotic intestinal flora tabs before you go spending loads of money on a holistic md. Google a candida diet to help you identify what to stay away from and see how you go. Candida can make you feel sluggish and vague but you have to stick to that diet (or foods recommended to consume by it) and steer clear of natural sugars too, like fruit, etc. It might help save you quite a bit of money.

I don't think 'candida' is a real thing, at least how it is described relating to illnesses, but things like disrupted immune system and bad mix of GI flora can have negative effects, mainly with inflammation, and some hormones released that affect both brain and gut...

Hey desolationrower, I got nasty food poisoning about 12 or so years ago from a large batch of contaminated peanut butter in Australia. After finding the cause by providing a stool sample, the doctors,"yes doctors," told me I also had candida. I never in my life thought I would ever hear that word come out of a doctors mouth at a hospital, there were 2 doctors present when they actually told me.

The funniest thing about it though was... that's all they said, they offered no treatment or suggestions on how to get rid of it, they actually looked embarrassed because I don't think they knew what to do except send me on my way. How funny is that!!!!

Peace C

While on the topic, don't rule out Lyme. Check your history for any tick exposure. Go to Lyme websites to spot the more common symptoms. Most lab tests are not helpful, but symptoms are. Neuropsychiatric symptoms predominate, with fatigue, memory loss, depression, and word finding diffulty being top ones.

It makes as much if not more sense than a doctor concluding that you have a "serotonin deficiency" without doing any tests whatsoever and giving you samples of the hot new AD that the cute pharmaceutical sales girl dropped by the office along with some lunch...

It's very possible that candida or a host of other things could have disturbed your immune system and that is causng mental depression. If you can balance or calm down your immune response you will probably start feeling a lot better.

I just wanted to pose this as thought to ponder.

Name off all the psych meds you can think of. I have tried probably 90% of them. Most caused me deterioration from baseline, or were intolerable, or just didn't do much. ECT failure also.

Now, I had momentary moments of complete remission on the following meds. Keep in mind, none of them are psychiatric. It just goes to show, other things do affect mood.

Doxycycline: Antibiotic effective against a wide range of resistant bacterias including Lyme. It is also a strong anti-inflammatory.

DMSA: A chelation med to remove lead and mercury from your system.

Dr. Clarkia tincture: A mix of three plants designed to kill parasites and some microbes.

And I've had three different doctors make their judgements. They all said it sounds like there is metal toxicity and some kind of infection causing my problems. Exactly how to do a more detailed diagnosis is difficult, and treatment is just as much of a guessing game as psychiatry. My immediate goal is to see an LLMD (Lyme Literate MD). I suspect an LLMD or an infectious agent MD will probably do me more good than another (8th?) psychiatrist.

Doxycycline was a powerful clue to me that things wrong in the body affect your mind more powerful than a tank.

I had much more powerful responses to those than any psych med. What does that mean? Again, just something to ponder.
