rehab for self injury? severe mental illness

Posted by dondon on November 25, 2008, at 11:44:02

Is there any rehab centers for people who are injured due to drug overdoses? I tried to kill myself by taking several bottles of cough syrup.
I was seriously injured(liver, kidney, pancreas damage) My stomach and bowels are messed up as well.

dondon how horrible. No I dont know of a rehab for suicide attempt that damage the body organs. Care to talk about what caused the suicide attempt. What meds were you on and are you at home now. So sorry. Love Phillipa

not sure if i'm understood right, but if i get what you're asking, i don't think there is a difference between a typical rehab facility vs one for suicide attempts when it comes to physical disabilities.

there are however facilities around the nation that are psychiatric facilities to help with mental illness such as depression...etc., and can help with suicidal ideation and also combat physical illness/disability and/or substance abuse.(co-morbid dx)

so sorry about your situation.
not sure if i answered your question.

Unfortunately dextromethorphan (I assume thats what you mean), can do very nasty things to your body and its a dissociative. You have to sign a register now for its (proper use) and its not available to people under 18 as far as I know still.

I don't know about rehab but I hope you received whatever care possible you could at the hospital. I assume you were admitted and possibly put on a hold, or watched in the ICU.

There really isn't anything you can do, I hate to say, but hope that your organs in time will heal. The liver and kidney damage (if it didn't affect all of both kidneys) may repair itself if you do NOT take anything that will affect it, including unfortunately some medications.

There are places and organizations for the mentally ill such as NAMI. You can look up your local chapter at www.nami.org

There are more intensive outpatient day programs for severe depression, which this sounds like. Be sure that they have medical staff. They can be expensive.

Ultimately, and I am not putting blame at all on you, please do not take this as that, it is watch and wait on what can be healed.

Transplants may be necessary, and often the mentally ill who are not being treated or seen are not put as much on the list because there is more of a chance of recidivism and because depression itself can alter rejection.

This is something that is so large that you really need to speak to your doctor (I hope), counselors, about what to do next. I imagine you must have a home nurse because this sounds rather serious.

I don't want to end on such a down note, but it is something that time will tell.

Hi dondon,

Depending where you live, I would find the best hospital you can get to, make an appt with the appropriate specialty (tell the receptionist what you told us, you'll probably get in a lot quicker) so that you will understand the extent of your injuries, how to not injure yourself again (even by accident), and find out what treatment, if any, would be helpful at this time, or in the future. If you have done all this, and your Doc's feel you need a rehab situation, ask for a referral.

Ideally, this Hospital has a psychiatric wing that you can coordinate services with at the same time. Or a referral to a good Psychologist and psychiatrist. If not, ask around for a recommendation or at the very least, call a hotline that can put you in touch with local psychiatric help. Remember though not to take meds or drink anything that could harm you further in the mean time.

I'm so sorry you are/were feeling so bad. Please find good Psych doctors as soon as you can. I know its hard to do when you feel so bad but you deserve and need help right now so don't wait! And in the mean time, be nice to yourself, please.
Things WILL get better. Just get the help you need dondon.

~Jade
