Neurontin dose for those who used?

Posted by Mikez on November 19, 2008, at 2:12:31

So i got my hands on some neurontin as I heard it can be good for sleep and mood. After SSRI poopout and even worse response to tricylics im looking outside the box. I had to pretend to have nerve pain though just to get it.

well it seems a popular drug on these boards.. im just wondering what the common dosage structure is for people taking it for depression/anxiety/ insomnia.

Thanx so much!

I'm not sure about the got hands on.... I think it should be under the guise of an MD, but whatever. After about 600-900mg at a dose it pees out your system and isn't useful. 2400-3600mg a day (4x). But be careful starting it, you can be rather loopy and have slurred speech. It can cause vision problems just like its cousin Lyrica.

It's not a completely innocent agent and is a potential CNS depressant but it is pretty untoxic in the right hands.

Its primarily useful for anxiety relief augmentation and some people swear they can sleep with it although personally I would be long used to that.

Thank you. I should mention, that it was prescribed by an MD.

That's fine -- I wasn't necessarily saying so, but the language "got hands on" or whatever it was, I hear things like this and I think, someone's got something from an overseas pharmacy or a friend. I'm sorry if I inferred that here.

Best wishes

I think the dose you suggested is way too high. The starting dose should be around 300 (100 mg 3 time a day) and then up to a total dosage of 900.

I took it for anxiety and it made me so spacey at just 300 mg and caused a lot of edema.

Just my 2 cents.

No, its dosed 4 times a day from 600 to 900 at its final dosing for some people. I'm not saying one needs to take that much. It may be as little as 600 x 3. I'm just saying that's the maximum that the body will typically handle without it eliminating from your system and becoming useless, in general.

I can't find you a lot of articles, I'm only going by the evidence based psychiatry that I've learned.

e.g. a bipolar case

http://bcbsma.medscape.com/viewarticle/417970_2

http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Profs/datasheet/a/ArrowGabapentincap.htm

As the dosage goes up as mentioned, the bioavailability will go down, this is very true.

Perhaps I was purporting the evidence based psychiatry on myself.

As for "addiction", Neurontin is a non-addictive medication. Just don't drop it when you're on it because you could have a seizure. Taper off of it sensibly.

Lyrica was given the lowest level of category addiction in the US -- C-V. It has a very slight potential for abuse but nearly nil for a lot of people. It also probably requires less than Neurontin for a good dose, but I could be wrong on that. It is a bit more powerful for some disorders. Unfortunately both of them can cause vision problems, Lyrica happened to do that for me.

So I stand partially corrected on amounts for perhaps some variety of people who take gabapentin, but as for frequency, it is typically divided 3 to 4 times a day because it doesn't have a lot of half life or availability in the system in general.

Thanx Jay that is helpful. What would you suggest for someone who is using it as an augmenter purely to help sleep and any additional benefits it may have on depression. I dont have bipolar or seizures. I took 300mg for the past 2 nights and slept more than 8 hrs for the first time in 3 months. Should I just work up to 900 given my situation? Also do you know its effect on appetite, if any?

THANX!

You may become used to the sleep effect after a while, if you are me -- that depends. But you're not me.

Yes, cautiously work up because you won't notice it yourself but people around you may or may not say your voice is a bit slurred in the first few weeks.

That is only one reaction and I'm not saying it will happen.

I'll just leave it at that it is a hard medication to overdose and I won't leave levels for obvious reasons, but prudence is needed so sure, go up slowly over weeks and see if it helps you with sleep.

But do NOT drop it once you've been on it for a while, cold even if people have said nothing has happpened. Work down over a few weeks if you don't like it. It is, after all an anti-seizure medication.

As far as I know, personally, it has no effect on appetite. Your miles may vary.

Watch your driving too if you've never taken much by way of AEDs or benzodiazepines. Watch for blurred vision -- if that happens you may have to back off and possibly try Lyrica.

Otherwise I'd say you're on the right track I think, again I don't know your exact situation and I'm not your doctor.
