anorgasmia and lexapro

Posted by eugenia on August 27, 2005, at 17:17:36

Has anyone else experienced anorgasmia on Lexapro--on as small of a dose as five miligrams? I was thinking of going down to 2.5. But, I am so freaked out. I have never been so sexually dead. Is that the price for not living in miserable anxiety all day? It sure is a deal with the devil.

Hi Eugenia,

No solutions, but I have found that the anorgasmia from ssri's does get better with time. It may take a few months, but it does get better. You can also skip meds for a couple of days, plan sex for this time off and then go back on. A lot of people have found that a brief drug holiday allows them to have some semblance of a sex life without having a negative effect on their depression.

Hi Eugenia,
I am pretty new to these boards, so I hope you don't mind my chiming in...I take Lexapro 20mg per day now, and at first i had problems, but started taking Wellbutrin to help, and it helps a good bit (I take 75 mg/day Wellbutrin and 20mg/day Lexapro). Also, I take the Lexapro right before I go to sleep at night, so that by bedtime (the time I am most likely to be having sex), the blood concentrations are at their lowest, since Lexapro is one of the shorter-acting SSRIs.
Warning: the next sentence may be too graphic...

Also, I find that some days, only extra help from a vibrator will help me have an orgasm. I don't know why, but my boyfriend was grateful to have the help anyway.

Cheers,
liz

I have had anorgasmia since I have switched over from celexa to lexapro. I had some on the celexa, but it seemed to get better after awhile. I was on the celexa for a couple of years, but was never like I was before the celexa (no meds whatsoever).

Since I have switched to the Lexapro, almost a year now, I have been even more anorgasmic, and it has never gotten better. I started on a low dose - 5 mg, and have been bumped up to 7.5 mg in the past three months. It has gotten even worse with the increase. I am ready to tell my pdoc that I can't take this stuff anymore.

I hope you're doing well!

One of the main reasons I switched from lex to nefazadone. I am doing whatever it takes to get around the sexual side effects that I have been dealing with for years. If nefazadone runs into problems, I am going to find a way to obtain agomelatine from ukraine, since stupid F**king bureaucracies like the FDA and EMEA won't release potentially life saving drugs in a timely manner.

Hi Dapper - is nefazadone a tricyclic? My brain injury therapist said that a doc at the Rehab Institute suggested to her that tricyclics are better for brain injury patients than SSRIs. I am worried about the side effects, but I want my sexuality back! ;-)

I hope you get what you need!

Oh, I wanted to mention, that my pdoc previously mentioned that Viagra might help. Since it's not covered by my insurance, my being female, I can't afford it! So, I have the prescription, but have never tried it. :-(

If you want your libido back, this will do it big time. Get on the Emsam patch, 1/2 of the 6mg will probably do it. Worked on my depression as well. when I had to "up" to 9mg, I switched to Parnate as the food resricts apply on the 9 patch.

Frankly, I couldn't have cared less about sex when I started it. THAT SOON CHANGED. It was embarrassing. It would hit me randomly sometimes, too. (Is there a tree close by? lol).

Anyway, if the patch isn't an option, its just seleligine, which should have the same effect. Remember tho, both are MAOI's. Get from a Dr. I'm not the only one. This is a common, ummmm, side effect. Parnate has similar effect, for me, but doesn't sound like you need a drug that risky.

You will become sexually alive, and the devil can take his toys, or not haha, and go home. You will have to switch AD's, and stick to some med no no's on the lower dose, which should be enough for what you need it for. Please at least try this. I'm not frigid, but I'm telling you, 24/7. It actually got on my nerves sometimes!

Please post and let us know what you decide, and the outcome.

Best wishes,

Jade

No its not a tricyclic. Do a wikipedia search on it and you will get the info to understand it better. It is chemically unrelated to SSRI's, tri's, or MAO's. The main hype with it is it can cause liver damage, although very rarely, and its recommended you get liver checks while on it. The original manufacterer pulled it from the marketis for this reason and its only available generic, if you live in the US. It's actually been taken off the market all together in some countries. Do a search on it and you will find the info you are looking for.
