i'm currently on 100 mgs of zoloft with good results. however, with winter coming up--and i hate winter--i'm considering upping the dosage to 150 mgs. my dr. is OK with this, but he mentioned that dosages higher than 112 mgs can be problematic.
how so?

I don't know your history but for unipolar maximum dose for zoloft usually 200mg. That's unipolare depression. Now if bipolar that could be why. Phillipa

Some side effects are dose dependent. If you're having a side effect at 100mg, it might be more severe at 150mg. I'm not aware of any side effect that would appear specifically at 112mg.
Another option would be adding Wellbutrin which is FDA-approved for seasonal affective disorder. The combination of SSRI (Zoloft) + Wellbutrin is quite effective for some people. SSRI effects serotonin while Wellbutrin effects dopamine and norepinephrine.

I have read articles that say even the makers of Zoloft have agreed that doses of over 100mg are no more effective than 150mg or 200mg, but you have to take every thing you read with a grain of salt. I found no difference from 100mg to 150mg in regards to depression, but anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, shaking and jumping at shadows increased greatly. So yes, 150mg was problematic for me personally. I do think your dr. has a good point. I wish my dr. had mentioned this to me, your dr. sounds like he knows what he is talking about, which is fantastic.
Discuss it with your doc, maybe adding something else to the mix might be a good idea as one of the above posters mentioned, instead of increasing your Zoloft dose. Good luck. peace C

adding wellbutrin sounds like a good idea. i have a feeling that increasing to 150 mgs won't be very much more effective.
my dr. is my PCP, the one who prescibes my meds. since so many of his patients are on antidepressants, it doesn't surprise me that he knows how they work.
thanks for all the good advice!

low dose nortiptyline is a common additive to zoloft with good reviews.

If you have good results right now, all I can say is don't mess with it. When/if the time comes that you are backsliding, then think about it. Until that happens, and hopefully never will, don't rock the boat. Go out and enjoy things, be glad what you have, and don't do a thing to mess it up. Which includes raising a dose in anticipation of something imagined.

excellent advice. that's one of my problems: i worry about the future too much. i dealt with the worst part of my depression without any medication. thank God for the therapist who advised me strongly to get on zoloft when i just couldn't deal with the anxiety. vitamin Z has helped me even out. i was originally on 50 mgs, on dr.'s advice, increased to 75 mgs, and then, on my own, went up to 100. that increment pushed me over into a better place. as far as enjoying things, i try. it's fleeting.

I take 150mg zoloft. No bad effects. And seems more effective at this dose than 100 or 50.
