My son is 10 years old and has been taking Ritaling for the last 4 years. This past May he started becoming very aggressive and with drawn. After school let out for the summer, I weened him off his meds. He became more out going, gained 11 lbs., and became the loveing child that he used to be before medication. He also started playing outside more and even if there were no other children to occupy him. Now that school is back in, we are falling back into the same rut. The bad does not out way the good but yet I don't want him to feel as if he is stupid. I have him on the low sugar, no artifical color, and no caffine diet. He also is taking Karate. I have recently started him on the omega-3's and multi-vitamin as suggested on the all natural supplement. What else can I do?

jj, it sounds as though you are doing the best things for him, although it sounds like in school, where focus is a bigger issue, he has trouble.
Have you ever discussed with his doc, another med, perhaps something that lasts longer than Ritalin? Also perhaps he only needs to take it when he is in school. Coming off it in the summer makes sense, when he doesn't have to be as focused, say outside in sports or things less structured.
Did you hear Michael Phelps was also ADD and was on medication? He decided to stop taking it as a kid since he wanted to be like everyone else and his mother got him involved in sports.
The rest is history...

Yea i knew it, he was on something! 8 golds, 7 world records,:)
Interestingly FWIW i was told years ago by an elderly gentleman who was at Munich, that Spitz took amphetamine, of course he never publicly tested positive.

Seems it's an amphetamine or a steroid. Isn't anyone just themselves anymore? Love Phillipa Spitz is my time frame. My Son swam New England Champs and was first in backstroke and second in free style when eight years old and he was a very calm child. My next door neighbor is a teacher and her feeling is that there is too much stimulation in classrooms today with computers etc.

Phelps stopped his meds, as a kid, at least that I heard when it was mentioned he had ADHD. So his performance today is based on a drug free life. They test for all that stuff anyway and no athlete wouldever risk testing positive.
Probably many of the kids on meds don't have to be, just like many on AD's don't have to be. You just have to find out what helps you deal with your anxiety, stress, depression, etc. Many more realistic solutions, such as exercise, can help as much as medication can.

Hello...
I think maybe you can try a bit of a compromise. I reacted the same way to Ritalin (although I am an aldult..) But smaller doses of Dexedrine (time released amphetamine) where fine with me. My depression lifted much better, and I had no anxiety problems with it. You can look the drug up at www.rxlist.com and you can also find a few other ADD stimulant meds there too. I think the best move may be to go slow on very small doses, for now. That's IMHO...FWIW...Best wishes for you and son...
