Xanax XR question

Posted by theo on August 23, 2008, at 22:11:30

My doctor prescribed me Xanax XR twice daily versus once as the medication states. He said it really doesn't last when you just take once daily and he said to take it at 7am and 7pm. Anyone else heard of taking it twice daily?

The only downside is the pillpopping frequency.

Forgot to mention, Dr.'s theory is if you need to take say 1mg Xanax XR per day, it's smoother to take .5mg twice daily. Sounds pretty realistic but was wondering if anyone out there taking Xanax XR splits their dose?

'xr' drugs aren't always that reliable

For whatever reason, XR meds often don't perform as advertised. With xanax xr, it seems common to either have multiple xr doses or xr supplemented with the good ole IR.
Same thing with stimulants: lots of people on adderall xr or the latest methylphenidate product (metadate, concerta, ritalin la, whatever) end up having to take an old school IR tab at least once during the day.

I'm not sure of the value or cost of XR Xanax, I think its partially just a patent extender, as there hasn't been any other benzodiazepines introduced since 1981.

This isn't directed at anybody, but an XR version of Xanax seems to encourage taking a short acting version of a benzodiazepine all day, constantly. I don't know if there is sound scientific theory behind this but I think that taking longer acting benzodiazepines if you have to take them for an extended period will work better for longer until one habituates. I'm not sure -- I guess some people respond better to Xanax, but I see it as a PRN drug.
