Pristiq and Male Sexual Side Effects

Posted by Bearfan on August 7, 2008, at 20:29:56

Was just wondering the risk of male sexual side effects with Pristiq? I've had problems on Effexor, and wanted to know how it compares with Effexor, Cymbalta and Lexapro.

I would be very, very, very surprised if Pristiq doesn't turn out to just like all the other similar drugs out there in terms of sexual side effects. It will probably almost identical to Effexor I'd have to guess.

I've been on Pristiq for a couple of months now and I have to say that it feels different from my experience with Effexor. It general the effect is much more subtle and the side effects are fewer. In my experience it has caused less sexual side effects than any of the other SSRI's and Cymbalta or MAOI's. however, I've noticed that the side effects were worse for the first two weeks. ~Dwight

I tried it for five days and noticed my anxiety and irritability levels increased. Did this go away in time?

Bob,

Yes, for me the drug has gotten gradually better the longer I've been on it. I did experience some increase in anxiety in the beginning but it was not nearly as severe as effexor. Then I felt for a few weeks like it really wasn't doing anything at all. Finally after about six weeks I'm sure the drug does help me with both anxiety and depression. Maybe this one just takes longer to work? Also makes sure you stick to the recommended dose of 50 mg. I tried going up to 100 mg a few days and then one day I woke up with pretty bad tremor/shakiness in my hands. Studies have shown that the effectiveness actually goes down with higner doses! It's possible that you may need to work your way up to 50 mg. If that's the case you could try taking the pill every other day. Just some thoughts. Pristiq works pretty well for me, but I believe there are probalby more effective SNRI combos out there especially, Zoloft + Nortryptyline. ~Dwight
