Benzos in general tend to make people more depressed.

I take valium it doesn't depress me. Klonopin did and the best is xanax as it has a slight antidepressant property. Shorter acting though unless you use the xanax cr or xr forget which. Phillipa

Xanax is usually the least likely to cause or worsen depression. For some people it even has antidepressant properties. Stories of benzo depression are fairly common with diazepam or clonazepam, but much less frequent with alprazolam.
Best thing to do is call the doc and let him know immediately that diazepam has you more depressed and you would like a different benzo. If he tells you they are all the same except for their halflives, well, then you know he doesn't know squat what he's talking about. In any case, you gotta tell your doctor what's happening with diazepam. Ask to switch to alprazolam. And while you're at it, specify that you want the brand stuff, not the generic. More expensive but worth it. There is a difference.

But it is a CNS depressant so that can lead to the fog that you're describing and the depression that you're feeling, sluggishness.
In the short run, these feelings may go away and help your anxiety more as you become used to it; in the long run, depending how long months to years, it can be years, you may habituate to it and become dependent.
In general they're good choices for short term management of anxiety but sleepier SSRIs like paxil and Luvox are better for long term management and possibly low dosage Seroquel if it really warrants. But that's an individual variability that I can't say since I really don't know your diagnosis.
