Consider the following ADs:
+ setraline
+ citalopram
+ venlafaxine
+ fuoxetine(i) How would you rank these i.t.o. long term safety?
(ii) How would you rank these i.t.o. effectiveness.
I know there's no concrete answer to this. I'm looking for opinions, not hard facts. I've decided to stop taking Cymbalta, and I'm trying to figure out where I go from here.
Any input would be appreciated.

The problem is there's no one answer for that question. Effectiveness is very individual.Since you're stopping Cymbalta, I'm guessing it didn't work out for you? If you say something about the problem you had with it, that would help in guessing which of these might be most helpful for you.
All the SRIs cause apathy for me, but of that list the sertraline was the least unpleasant for me. I never took citalopram, but did take escitalopram, which was the worst of the SRIs for me.
Have you asked your doctor what he/she thinks might be helpful?
Good luck.

Wasn't there a posted study by someone that prozac was safest. Sorry you're stopping the cymbalta but understand why. I would think effexor xr would have the same risk. Othes seem okay. Love Phillipa

What risk is that?

To clarify, I am quitting Cymbalta because it has what I consider an unacceptable risk profile with long term use. However, Cymbalta worked fantastically well for me. Best AD I've ever used!
This is how I would rank the ADs in my short-list:
Safety, from safest to least safe:
* citalopram
* sertraline
* fuoxetine
* venlafaxineEffectiveness, from most to least:
* venlafaxine
* sertraline
* fluoxetine
* citalopramI'm thinking I might go with Zoloft. OTOH my understanding is that duloxetine was developed using fluoxetine as a template, so Prozac might be a good choice considering how well Cymbalta worked for me.
Any thoughts?

I have tried Zoloft, Effexor, and Wellbutrin. A combo of Zoloft and Wellbutrin worked best for me.
I've read many times that Wellbutrin is side-effect free, but I don't think that's true. By itself, it caused me severe insomnia and weight loss. However, I had bad insomnia before I started taking it, and I was already underweight due to major depression.
When I was on Zoloft alone, I was apathetic with no sex drive at all.
Effexor caused me panic attacks, night sweats, and vomiting. However, I only gave it a few days because I hated these effects so much.
Zoloft + Wellbutrin is working well for me. Side effects aren't too bad (see my threads above about muscle twitches and..ahem...rather mediocre orgasms). I do *have* a thriving sex drive, though.
I still have emotional ups and downs. What the meds have given me is an ability to gain distance on them. I can know that bad feelings will pass and they don't mean my life is s**t.

Prozac has been around the longest and is activating or was with my short trial of it when it first came out. Phillipa
