Does anyone know if Xanax XR will retain its extended release properties if you break the pill in half?

just a guess, but I think it would be alright. my pdoc let me try some ambien xr extended release samples she had and said it was fine to cut them in half. I imagine the same goes for Xanax. it might be slightly different, but probably the same extended relief I am guessing

It's strange. I have a similar situation with Eskalith CR where they monographs tell you to never break or crush the tablet before taking it, yet the tablet is actually scored. I've taken Eskalith CR on and off for years now and I've never noticed a difference between the whole pill, and breaking it.
Xanax XR may indeed retain its controlled release properties when broken, but why do the monographs always say you can't do this?

I suggest you call your pharmacist for this kind of question. This board is great, but sometime it's way more logical to call your pharmacist, and I think this is a good example Bob.

My guess is yes, it can be cut in half without affecting the extended release. Unlike, say, Ambien CR, which has a second dose inside an enteric coating, Xanax XR reformulates the drug itself for slower release.
Layman's opinion, you get what you pay for :)

I'm not actually taking any Xanax right now, but why do you say to avoid the XR?

In my opinion they do not release the way they should a few people I know have to take regular with it to run smooth. When I tried it I did not like it at all. Love Phillipa
