SAMe

Posted by X-ray on June 9, 2008, at 8:24:19

Hi,

Has anyone tried SAMe?

S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine
Numerous clinical trials have shown SAMe equivalent to tricyclic antidepressants.
(Medication Fact Book/The Carlat Psychiatry Report).

Be careful with SAMe. I tried it for a couple of weeks as an alternative to antidepressants, and it made me very manic, with racing thoughts, agitation, and obsessions.

That said, it does work for a lot of people, but I think it is important to note that OTC supplements can often have as many side effects as prescribed medications.

X-ray,

I had my second-best antidepressant response to a combination of SAMe and Parnate.

The biggest problem that I had with the SAMe was fatigue. Caffeine helped with it a bit, but I had to lower my SAMe dose from 200 mg/day to 150 mg/day to optimize my results.

SAMe got me out of bed & kept me out. I was taking it for 9 years. i just stopped taking it a week ago because i couldn't afford my prescription & SAMe at the same time. I just ph'd my p-doc last night complaining that i had more energy taking 200mg of Seroquel(which is really sedating) & 1600mg of SAMe than i do w/ 100mg of Seroquel & no SAMe. i also take 60mg of Celexa & 375mg of Effexor. As soon as i get some $ from the government, i'm going back to adding SAMe. i had the best week in years last week while i was taking everything. my head is foggy right now. i can't work like this & my kids are suffering. hopefully everything will work out soon.

jana73,

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been doing well without SAMe. Hopefully you'll get that money soon so you can get back on the SAMe and feeling better. I wish you the best.

To reiterate what someone else said.. it does work for depression, but it triggered hypomania and panic attacks with me.
