I feel sick...Abilify?

Posted by Sebastian on December 22, 2006, at 13:58:24

I think abilify makes me feel sick. My stomack sick, head ack, feel like throwing up. Or is that the lack of zyprexa. I'm actualy drinking less alcohol since starting the abilify, so why does my stomack feel sick? 2 drinks a day.

You asked if it was the lack of zyprexa? What dose were you on? For how long? How recently did you stop? What was the size of your last dose and how long had you been at that dose?

I weaned off zyprexa very slowly, and that was from just 5mg. When I was finally done with it, I swear I felt flu-like for a solid month. I had no appetite. Food was not appealing at all. Sadly I ended up going back on it. I remember the day after my return 2.5mg dose how good it felt to be hungry, not nauseated, and enjoy food. Anyway, I have since slowly weaned down to 1.25mg. This is going to take some time. Sigh.

It sounds to me like zyprexa could definitely be involved. The side effects of starting a new med are probably mixed in there too. You could always test it by continuing the abilify as you are, but add in 1.25mg zyprexa, then slowly wean off of that in tiny chunks over a month or two.

I gave up and went back on the zyprexa at half the dose. 10mg was my dose now I take 5mg. The sick feelings don't always happen some times I feel great. Maybe it was all the dose changes I was at 0mg. I'm not trying to get off it all the way now, becuase my blood sugar is normal again. Less than 100 after meals. Was 140 in the morning and occasionaly 250 after a meal. You could be right that sick feeling is not abilify because every time I tried it I would stop the zyprexa right away. I took 10mg zyrpexa for most of the last 10 years, but tried lower doses at times. Over the last 2 weeks I had 3 days at 0mg and the rest were 5 mg days. I felt great for the first day or 2 off zyprexa but then it all felt bad, could not eat the taste of food made me sick, it tasted bad too like it was old and stale. And my head felt awfull, head ackes never had one of those on zyprexa.

Why do you want off the zyprexa?

What IS THE DEAL with zyprexa anyway?? I have posted elsewhere on this board that I've had difficulty withdrawing from zyprexa. I thought it was just me. Guess not. I was at 20 mg of zyprexa for 6 years. Aside from my previous withdrawal attempts, I have now weaned myself down to 5 mg a night of zyprexa in my 7th year on this med. I see from your post that I will need to go very slowly to further reduce the zyprexa I take, and then may still face withdrawal symptoms. This concerns me. Is this something else that Eli Lilly is aware of and conveniently forgot to tell the public about concerning long term use of this drug? Now I'm even more determined to get this zyprexa monkey off my back.

probably because antipsychotics are the most toxic medication for mental illness available, more toxic than heroin, enough to make anyone sick.

why don't you try less toxic meds to see if they help you like minor tranquillizers or having a drink instead, or even methodone is heaps more healthy. ;)

It could be either of them, or a combination.

Abilify is known to cause stomach problems; some significant percentage of people can't use it for that reason.

I don't know about zyprexa, so it could also be a discontinuation syndrome reaction-- the general sickness and headache could be related to that.

So you might want to see if adding one or subtracting one (subtracting abilify, for example--or upping your doze of zyprexa, if you've recently cut it) makes a difference.

This mostly has to be figured out empirically, on a case by case basis, as I'm sure you know.

I hope you feel better soon,

Nadezda

I've just started Abilify about 2 weeks ago and I feel sick, have a constant headache, and my stomach feels like it's doing somersaults constantly....these are all side effects but if you have just stopped a med then that could be part of it too

If it is just side effects then they should wear off after a few weeks....

I also drink a lot less alcohol than I used, I've found I can't drink much now
