I want to take something that will increase dopamine ( for motivation, alleviate blunted emotion, etc.) But everytime I have tried something , like low dose selegiline, macuna prurians ( sp?) , vitex, and others, I get pretty irritable and jittery, anxious.
Does this go away after your body gets used to it?
Thanks for any answers on this.

I am on ropinirole, 2mg/day, but till now I had only side effects. I want to see more opinions on it too.

Hi JB,
As amongst many others, I've tried this route too. I get the exact same experience as you do. The longest I stuck it out for was 2 months, and still the anxiety was unbearable.
One option could be to take it along with a tranquillizer - which I did, but it wasn't very effective for me.
Take care,

In some cases, an opioid would help. Buprenorphine has some properties that may make it ideal, as it produces a greater dopamine increase that morphine, and has fewer side effects.
It should be remembered that many dopaminergic agents are inspecific and boost noradrenaline to a similar extent. In these cases, it may be helpful to add guanfacine to the mix.

> JBHi JB
I'm diagnosed Bipolar II/NOS and have always responded very well to all doperminergic substances (medications and recreational...).
I'd suggest trying Pramipexole (Mirapex) first. It's a D2/D3 agonist with preference to the D3 receptor, 'apparently' the D3 is the antidepressant receptor (a very armchair approach there), but it has been the only med, apart from Subutex (a strong opiate) that has almost put me into full remission.
I came off it after about four months to try Trivistal (only reason being their website said it had even more D3 affinity), it didn't have quite the same effect, so I went back to Pramipexole but alas it didn't work again. I was gutted. Lesson learnt, if something works that well, stick with it! Sticking with DA's I also had a partial response to Ropinerole.
Abilify (the newest antipsychotic on the market) would also be worth a shot. It seems the mode of action is it acts as a D2/D3 'stabilizer', neither an agonist nor an antagonist. Again I responded very well to it, but couldn't suffer the akasthesia and severe constipation. Shame really.
I am about to start a session on Amineptine (the only SDRI ever put on the market). I have high hopes for it, but I have to order off the grey market and it'll be expensive too. We'll see what happens though...
Hope this helps
Gary

Garylee,
Good luck with the amineptine, I had no idea that it was available anywhere anymore.

For a few days now, I have been taking the herb Vitex , which is a D2 agonist. I exercise everyday and have noticed that if I take it before I exercise its a really good mix, almost like I get a slight buzz , maybe its the mix of dopamine release and endorphins. Anyway, I have found that this approach really tones down any anxiety, unlike when I take it without exercising.
