Child abuse permanently alters hippocampus DNA

....which can be associated with suicide later in life.

Here are some quotes lifted from the text of the study:

"In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that rRNA in the human hippocampus of suicide subjects with a history of childhood abuse or severe neglect and controls who died suddenly of unrelated causes without a history of childhood abuse or severe neglect is differentially methylated and expressed....

The rRNA promoter was heavily methylated throughout the promoter and 5′ regulatory region in the hippocampus of suicide subjects in comparison with that of controls (F(1) = 191.04, P<0.0001). Twenty-one out of 26 CpG sites were significantly more methylated in suicide subjects compared to controls, whereas no CpG was more methylated in controls relative to suicide subjects (F(25) = 11.01, P<0.001)....

A greater number of sequenced clones were hypermethylated in the suicide subjects, whereas control subjects showed a greater number of hypomethylated clones. An analysis of the regression slopes between groups revealed a significant (F(1) = 7.33, P<0.01) interaction between the number of methylated CpG sites per clone for suicide subjects compared to controls. These data indicate a dramatic increase in the ratio of methylated to unmethylated clones among suicide subjects across most CpG sites....

There were no significant differences within the suicide subjects or the controls when the overall percentages of rRNA methylation of those with mood disorders were compared to those without mood disorders as well as among those with substance abuse disorders compared to those without substance abuse disorders (all P's>0.05)......

Lar that doesn't mean that verbally abused kids and those left alone all become depressed and a lot committ suicide does it? If so it needs a trigger. Phillipa

But I can see some problems based on the limited amount you posted. (Sorry, not feeling well and can't read the whole thing right now...)

The biggest issue I have with the results is not knowing whether or not those suicides had had any sort of treatment for the childhood trauma.

That's my current hobbyhorse, by the way -- we know that childhood trauma causes damage. I want to know how much it can be healed through treatment -- and I want to know what sorts of treatment will help most.

Thank you for posting this -- I'll try to read the study later, because it does sound interesting.

Hi Larry.

Great find!

This fits my life chart exactly. I believe this is one of the most significant findings I have seen yet regarding psychosocial stressors and altered brain function where the region affected is well known to facilitate mood and memory.

Yep, child abuse is bad, very bad in a lot of ways. I have arthritis of the neck from being banged around a lot, stage 2, way too far progressed at my age. A pain I will have to live with all my life especially when I get older. Who knows how f*ck*d up my hippocampus is, but I know it messes you up a lot emotionally too.
