Getting even worse..

Posted by alexa35 on April 5, 2008, at 17:28:49

If anyone can help me....this is my only place to turn. I'm alone all weekend and rather anxious - this depression feels unbearable..Psychiatrist can't see me until Tuesday.
I stopped the Adderall and am still on the Wellbutrin but maybe I should stop that as well.
SNRI and SSRI's never helped me. Wellbutrin seemed to lift me a bit a few years ago but now this time around.
o perhaps the Wellbutrin is only worsening the depression?
I guess my question is that after weeks on an AD, your depression can actually get worse if it's the wrong drug?? This feels unbearable... Thanks.

So you've been on Wellbutrin for 5 weeks?

I wonder if you would feel so very much worse without it?

But you don't know.

You've only just stopped one medication. Why not stick it out with the Wellbutrin until Tuesday? It could be that you'll feel better once the Adderall is out of your system. Why not give it a chance?

See, that's something I have trouble wtih -- I'll think, "Gee, I have to stop this medication RIGHTTHISVERYMINUTE!" Only, if I do that prematurely, I don't get a chance to see if the medication in question would actually work. It's something I remind myself of constantly when starting a new medication.

So, that's my thought on the subject... I hope it helps.

If you have some Xanax or other benzos handy, that might help you until Tuesday.

If that's not available I suppose you could get a bottle of nice Vodka & orange juice. It might just put a warm glow on the weekend - enough to get you through to Tuesday....?

Good Luck

Yes! An antidepressant can make you more depressed after days or weeks, regardless of whether it once worked for you or not. There are suicide warnings for a reason. Few clinical studies have looked at this issue, but the couple I saw showed a range of 5% to 15% of patients do get worse on a drug.

I don't care what it is...a vitamin, a food, a mineral, an herb, an oil, a medicine, whatever...if it makes you feel worse it should be stopped. If you do that, it is best to discuss it with the doctor and with those around you and to do it gradually so as not to rock the boat too much. There have been many people here that gave good long trials to meds, they were depressed the whole time, and when they stopped they said they felt a lot better. Still depressed, but better than when on the drug.

Oviously that is not the way anyone wants the drugs to work, but it does happen. I am notorious for getting worse on 9 out 10 meds.

You better than anyone knows whether the med has made you worse or not. If you are to stop it, you could consider reducing the dose by a small amount while awaiting to see the doc

Thanks to everyone! A follow-up

You all gave me such GREAT advice and I learned a lot -- interesting about the toxicty/adrenal/thyroid idea.

Yes, the Wellbutrin and Adderall proved very bad for me. My dr. felt terrible! But it wasn't his fault at all. I seem to be treatment resistant. The drug he is recommending now is Lamictal. Sort of scared to try it but he will start me very slowly...so we'll see. It's my last hope! In the meantime 1 hour of cardio the past 2 days has helped.
Thanks again.
