On Wellbutrin, still depressed?

Posted by sometimesblue on March 29, 2008, at 23:54:07

i've been on wellbutrin for some time now, months i guess, but not a year. And I'm getting depressed again. Aren't anti-depressants supposed to "fix" that? I don't understand why I feel like this? I feel like crap, hopeless, sad, I just feel like crying. I don't get it, I was doing GREAT, once i started taking wellbutrin i was feeling like myself again. I went through this same crap the first time i was on zoloft, great for months, then...it's like I crash, my heart crashes, i feel sad all the time. Doesn't this ever go away?

I don't know but feel it's a matter of the degree of depression and I myself couldn't tolerate wellbutrin too stimulating for me. Although taken off after a week. Who knows what would have happened if on it longer? Phillipa

I'm sorry to hear you're crashing. Been there... many times. But you need to come to terms with something: depression, BP, SAD, whatever your dx is -- is forever. It's not curable, unlike many other diseases. So it's up to us to manage our lives and manage our difficulties. If your current med is failing, call your doctor and insist that he/she do something - change the dose, switch you to a different med, something! I know this is hard, because when you are depressed, it's hard to do anything to help yourself. If you can, it helps to identify the early warning signs; things that tip you off that you're sliding down. For me, it's sudden, severe carbohydrate craving and becoming more solitary - not returning friends' phone calls, not wanting to see anyone. Of course, this would apply in the future since it sounds like your depression is pretty full-blown at the moment. I sincerely hope you get some help and some relief soon.....

Hi, sometimesblue - I was where you are now exactly 4 months ago. Had been on wellbutrin 300mg for about a year and ... I don't know, it just stopped working. And I was on the brand too! So my pdoc upped the dose to 450 but it was waaaaay to much - I couldn't sleep and was still so tired and depressed. I took things into my own hands and switched to Ixel, and have recently added Provigil. I was pretty despondent when the WB stopped working for me, like what is WRONG with me?!?!?! But after finding this board I realize that many people have to switch drugs after a year or two or 5 or 10. Don't know why, only that it is not uncommon for a drug to poop out. Get in to see your pdoc right away and ask for something different, and good luck! Be sure to keep in touch with us - we are all learning from each other and will be curious to hear what the answer is for you!
