Nardil weight gain - What on earth is happening?!?

Posted by tapiocamonk on February 17, 2008, at 16:16:27

Dear All,

Anyone know what to make of this weirdness:

I weighed myself on January 30th, about a month into my Nardil therapy and about two weeks after I had hit my effective dose of 60mg. I weighed 170lbs (I'm a 5'8" male with a goal of 155lbs - down from peak wait of 215lbs last year).

A few days later, I began a very serious workout program at a boot camp in NYC (http://purepowerbootcamp.com/). It's an hour/day, 4 days/week of some of the most strenuous exercising I have ever done. A tone of cardio; it's just completely intense. I've also started lifting weights in the past week at a gym in addition to the boot camp.

My diet has been consistent (I eat a low carb diet and have with great success for many months), though my portions (of things like roast chicken and turkey, mind you) have increased a bit since starting the intense workout.

I was expecting to weigh somewhere in the mid 160s when I weighed myself this morning for the first time since my January 30th weigh in. Instead, I was shocked to see that I now weigh 184lbs!!!!. That's a 14lb gain in just over two weeks, as is about 20lbs more than I was expecting to weigh.

My pants seem to be fitting looser or at least just as loose as they were fitting a few weeks ago, but the scale still says 184 (and I checked it on a second scale). Some of this could be muscle, but that couldn't be anywhere near the 14-20lb overweight number that I was hit with.

Anyone have any ideas or think this could/couldn't be Nardil related? Some of it could be retained food as I'm definitely constipated (but 14lbs of constipation - is that even possible???).

please advise!

Seriously if you're a guy you will build muscle quickly and it's way heavier than fat. The fact that you say your clothes are the same or loser is great. Think if you weren't doing all this excercise and it had maybe turned to fat. Be thank-full and maybe a fleets enema and see if any weight changes. And seriously good luck. Phillipa

Hi,
That much weight gain that fast is probably water weight. Edema is a common side effect of Nardil. When you pull your socks off in the evening see if there is an indentation in the flesh. Water weighs a lot. Google Nardil and edema together.
Good Luck,
Jedi

Thanks to you both, Philipa and Jedi. Given the amount of weight I have likely lost due to exercise, we're talking in excess of 15 lbs of water retention. Do you know of anything I can do about that or is this one of those Nardil side-effects that goes away over time?

thanks!

Hi again,
Since Nardil decreases vitamin B6 and low B6 can cause edema; maybe a B6 supplement would help. I haven't really researched this, but I do have some of the symptoms of B6 deficiency. "Specifically, clinical studies have shown the benefits of vitamin B6 in treating:
autism
carpal tunnel syndrome
asthma
endometriosis
premenstrual syndrome
edema
atherosclerosis
acne
attention deficit disorder
schizophrenia
clinical depression"

Good luck,
Jedi
