How long does it take for Wellbutrin to work?

Posted by Maxime on January 9, 2008, at 19:48:45

Hi

I have been on Wellbutrin SR 200 mg for only a few days. I started with 100 mg and increased it to 200 mg as per my pdocs instructions.

When will I feel the positive effects of Wellbutrin? I have been on it before but never got past 2 days because psychosis set in. Now I am on Seroquel so no voices!

I don't feel any side effects at all. It's weird.

I hope it works soon ( I am so fed up with being depressed 24/7)

Any comments would be appreciated.

Maxime

It's supposed to work a bit faster than other AD's like SSRI's. I would think you should see some improvement in 2 weeks after going to the 200mg dose. It made me feel quite energized at first, but I started at 150mg and quickly moved to 200 and then 450. That's when things started going downhill. In retrospect, the dose was way too high for me and it was just the wrong med for my situation. How's it going for you so far? Many people really like Wellbutrin. It erased my appetite which was a mixed blessing...

I feel nothing so far. No side effects or feeling speedy (which I was hoping for). I metabolise meds really quickly, so I wouldn't be surprised if I end up on more than 200 mg. Although I will give it several weeks before asking for an increase.

Thanks!

I also had quick results with it when I first started it. I was taking the XL, rather than the SR, so I started at 150mg for a week, then up to 300mg. By the end of the second week at 300, I was singing as I cooked breakfast -- generally a sign that I'm feeling better. (Of course, since I can't sing worth you-know-what, a mixed blessing for my husband...)

Good luck with it. Wellbutrin is my good and trusted friend -- no side effects after about the first month, and few before that. It's just a good, friendly, happy pill for me.

Oh, yeah -- and I'll be starting back on it in a week myself, so we can race for results, how's that?

maxime.. it is so hard waiting for meds to work.. i did get a speedy feeling from wellbutrin.. that came on pretty quickly.. within a few doses for me. But it faded away boo hoo. For me it is hard to say cause depression tends to fade rather than just go away but i thnk it was a couple of weeks.. hope it helps u

Thanks Racer! What is the difference between the SR and XL.

My memory is crappy because I realised I had only taken the Wellbutrin since Monday! I don't know, in my mind I had been on it for at least a week.

SR is sutained release, designed for twice a day dosing. XL is extended release designed for once daily dosage. I don't believe Xl is available in Canada.

Yes, we have Wellbutrin XL in Canada. I wonder if there is any difference (in terms of effectiveness) between the SR and XL?

Maxime,

I haven't had the XL, but I took both regular Wellbutrin and SR. I felt a bit better on the SR because the dosing was smoother. Also at the higher doses the SR was less likely to give me a headache.

Hi Maxime,

Good to know, I thought XL was only out in the US. My understanding is that it isn't really more effective, but that it might lessen side eefects.

MAYBE it's working

I feel a little better today. More energy than usual (been very fatigued lately). It could be the Wellbutrin or it could be the retail therapy I did this afternoon. :)

Personally, retail therapy has a much shorter lead time for me -- I feel much better right away when I have a successful retail therapy session!

Unfortunately, I had an unsuccessful retail therapy session today. And exhausting -- drove around for nearly seven hours! (Mostly with my mother, too...)

Oh, well...

I am currently on 300mg of wellbutrin sr(150mg 2x a day) I have only been taking it for 10 days. In the past I was on lexapro which stopped working after I went off it for the summer and tried to take it again. I also tried Celexa but it made me completely exhausted all the time. I do feel as though it has started working a bit in only 10 days. It has not affected my appetite (which for me is a good thing as I do not need to lose weight). I`ve noticed minor side effects such as headache and itching (I read about other people experiencing the itching on this website which makes me feel better- I thought I was going crazy!) I really would not mind if wellbutrin made me hyper since I am a college student and can always use extra energy. However I have anxiety problems also so hopefully that wont get worse with this medication. Best of luck with the wellbutrin, I hope it ends up working out!

Thanks! Actually today I started to itch. Well it's more of a pins and needles kind of thing. I don't know, but it's weird.

I Wellbutrin helps you as well!

Unfortunately the only thing wellbutrin did for me was helped me to stop smoking. It made me depressed and tired all the time. Maybe it was the fact that it was the xr version I'm not sure, regardless, I wanted off. Good Luck

I'm feeling really down, but no psychosis thanks to Seroquel. Maybe the Wellbutrin will help me ... I hope it does. Sorry you are suffering.

I don't think the Wellbutrin has made anything worse. But I don't think things are any better either. :(
