What would be a good drug to counteract the effects of Zyprexa induced hunger? I've tried Provigil and it works great for that but it is making me feel very bad otherwise.
I don't think a true stimulant (like Adderal) is a good idea since I have terrible anxiety issues. Don't think my pdoc would prescribe it anyway. I've tried Straterra and it didn't affect my apetite at all.
Is there anyone out there taking Zyprexa who has found a solution to the hunger/craving for massive amounts of food issue with Zyprexa?

I take 7.5 mg when I first get up in the morning. I know most people take it at night but I am more scared during the day and it seems to help that somewhat. It's not helping that much, though. I am thinking of going back to Geodon. I really don't like the idea of being on Zyprexa.
HOw are you, Phillipa?

I wonder if Topomax would be helpful for you? Have you ever tried it? That's the only one I can think of.

I know there are fairly benign drugs out there for other health conditions that probably cause a lack of appetite. I don't know what they are, but I'm sure they exist.
How about good ole H2O. Drink 2 to 4 liters of water every day. That is not only healing and healthy but also anti-appetite.
Probably the most appetite suppressing drug I ever took was low dose Naltrexone added to Prozac, supposedly works good with SSRIs for depression. It did help a little bit. The lack of appetite was fierce. Appetite did return to normal after a few weeks though, so I'm not sure any drug will work longterm. Just drink tons of water.
Though it takes a couple months to get used to it, carry around a lot things to munch on all the time that are weight friendly and healthy, such as carrots, celery, peppers, fruits. It is hard at first, you get real sick of eating the same damn ole things all day long. After a while though your body actually starts to prefer them over other foods and you feel healthier all around.
There's nothing wrong with having drug-induced hunger in my humble opinion, as long as the foods or liquids that are consumed to satisfy that hunger are healthy and extremely low in calories.

Problem is, I'm bulimic. It doesn't just make me hungry it makes me binge and purge. So tomorrow I go off Zyprexa and back to Geodon. The Provigil was making me feel bad anyway. But I've ordered some Adrafinal.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think it should be forbidden to give Zyprexa to anyone with an ED. I was put on it to gain weight, and boy did I gain. It was awful.
Good luck with the Geodon.

Hi Marsha,
Jim Phelps' site has some information on how to deal with olanzapine/Zyprexa weight gain. However, his site is a bit outdated.
There seems to be recent double-blind placebo-controlled evidence that amantadine, metformin/Glucophage, and Topamax are palliative against Zyprexa-induced weight gain, without causing a worsening of mood. The most compelling evidence (based on study size) seems to be in favor of amantadine.
A larger study from 2004 (n=125) found that immediate addition of amantadine prevented weight gain over a period of 2 years. [Abstract at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15572269]. Meanwhile, a smaller study from 2005 (n=21) found that over a 12 week period amantadine halted weight among Zyprexa users who had already gained at least 5 lbs. [Free full text at: http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/162/9/1744]
Another small (n=43) study on topiramate/Topamax found that it led to weight loss among Zyprexa users [Abstract: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15876898]
A very recent intermediate-size study (n=80) found that metformin/Glucophage led to weight loss among people who had been taking Zyprexa for some time. [Abstract at: http://http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17490862]
You might want to do a pubmed search using "olanzapine" and the generic names of the other three meds individually -- there are other references out there. There also seems to be some evidence that Topamax and Glucophage actually benefit certain psychiatric parameters, at least when given in conjunction with an atypical antipsychotic.
Hope this helps,

hi 4wd. im not sure how long you've been taking it. but i notice that from the beginning zyp makes me very thirsty. if i catch on to that right away and just start drinking lots of water than even if i do get extra cravings? i drink and am satisfied. i don't know if that will help after you've been on it for a while but i'd give it a try.
i've been on zyprexa this is my third time (stopped for various reasons not the drug) only once i gained weight but my T says it was more the other meds than zyprexa since my Hx i don't typically gain on zyprexa.
best wishes
b2c.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went off the Zyprexa a couple of days ago. I could deal with a little weight gain but I am a recovering bulimic and I couldn't deal with going back to the bulimia (which is what was happening with the Zyprexa.

Hi Marsha did you substitute another med for the zyprexa? Sounds like you did what was best for you and I'm sure your pdoc knows. Phillipa

I just went back to Geodon. I'm not doing so well but I'm hanging on. I just can't go back to being bulimic and the Zyprexa wasn't working all that great anyway.
